I did mine with a quick scuff and feather edge of any chips then applied barbeque black paint...this was about 10 years ago and has chipped or flaked off since....it was a semi-flat..

DJ,
I have just sand blusted it along with the control arms and powder coat everything in black semigloss. It looks great.

Regular paint should work fine. I had my previous 308 valance bead blasted and paint with a satin type black finish, sort of in between flat and semi-gloss, but closer to flat. The heat seemed to have no effect, at least during the two years after, until I got rid of the car...

I've been told by several noted Ferrari body shops/restorers that for doing small areas/touch-ups, Krylon Semi-Flat (out of a spray can) is 'spot on' to the factory semi-flat on the areas you are referencing.

Hi Lee, When I say valance I mean the black louvered apron below the rear bumper that hides the muffler and pipes from those following the car. The tailpipes exit through this piece also. There is no burnt paint on mine just old and pitted.
The first step I used was to chemically strip the piece to bare metal. One hour. I am going to sand all of the rust off and then sand the entire part until all of the pits and bumps are smoothed out. I'm going to use Phosphoric Dichromate (OSPHO,found at ACE Hardware) to etch the metal to stop the rusting process at a molecular level and then prime with DP90. From there you might hire somebody to shoot the final coats.
I'm no expert, just going by what the local body guy told me.
Hope that helps, DJ

DJ and everyone: Is the valance the louvered part over the engine, or is it the exhaust shield? Either way, I need to sand, prime and repaint my exhaust shield, where (thankfully) 95% of the rust is on my '78 308.

Any pointers to getting it back to stock-looking? I'm no great painter, either, so advice on getting it nice and smooth would help, too.

Most paint will burn off any area close to the exhaust unless you have it powder coated - even the BBQ stuff

The BBQ grill paint I've seen is pretty much flat black. That it? Gotta get it right.

Yeah, like high heat grill paint for the barbeque.

More like a satin finish then. Sounds right. Thanks,

Definitely NOT high gloss. It's semi-gloss, actually almost flat.

I stripped the rear valance on my '78 308 in preparation for new paint. The old paint was so old I couldn't tell if it was gloss black or semi-gloss originally. Any paint guys out there?
Thanks again, DJ
