Congratulations on the new car. I'm sure you'll love it. My top squeaked too and I finally replaced the latches and have had no problem since.

Put some urathane window sealer (like used to install windshields) under the seals to raise them and increase the pressure. This will stop leaks and squeaks and is not visible and easily removed.

I've sprayed belt dressing on the seal and it works for a week or so.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice, I will give some of them a try. I have been looking at this site for several months and was so impressed by the friendly help that it helped convince me that a Ferrari really is feasible to maintain myself.

For long lasting relief - replace the top seals. Squeaking will be gone and the top will fit like it did when new - as tight as a drum!

Congrats and good luck!!

Paul:
Congratulations on buying the 328--you'll love it.
The chat is good; it will help you out.
The swimming pool stuff is a thick silicone grease it is about $20/tube.
Also, Hot Rod shops and McMaster Carr carry it.

Try some O-Ring lube.
Buy it at a hydraulic supply house or get it from:
www.grainger.com
Part # 6Y770
Won't harm rubber- in fact it absorbs in and will help it stay flexible.

Mark,
You might be on the right direction.
If you take apart a water sprinkler you can see the silicone paste on the rubber seal.

Maybe its a long shot but; Last summer I went to swimming pool supply store to buy a lube for pump seals. They have a paste that looks and feels like vasoline, but is silicon based.

The best product to use will be silicone paste.
I used it years ago when I worked at an M B dealership. We used it to stop all body rattles, antennas, seals, locks, etc. I have been looking for that product but I can't find it. I will place a call to my friends that still work there and see if I can get some unless somebody on the board knows about it.

I don't get it... what's squeeking? My 308QV doesn't make any kind of noise like that; never has. The only thing I get when the targa is on is more of a "creaking" noise when the body is going through an unusual flex, like turning into a driveway. No rubber squeek kind of noise at all.

I use a little silicone spray on the rubber trim around the doors and targa top. No squeeks.

I have an idea about this which I'm about to try on my '85 QV. I have had fiberglass kitcars in the past and , since they squeak like mad everywhere, I set out to find something to combt this problem. The best solution I found was stick - on felt. I used to use it wherever fiberglass met metal/ fiberglass and it worked like a charm. I noticed that there are bare , ie unupholstered, areas on the front and back of the targa top which rest on the rubber seals. I'd be willing to bet that a strip of felt on these areas woul do the trick. The stuff can be found in craft stores and usually comes in one foot squares. My only concern might be that it could be difficult to close the latches. However, the stuff is very thin and it may be OK. I may try it soon and will report back.

Frank,

Interesting! - I was told to use Vaseline by a Local Ferrari shop!

I have used Vaseline on my car since I have had it with no problems, but with the cause of concern & a bit of research I would think that a silicone based lube would be safer.

Investigating a tad further it seem that Rubber and Latex are two different beasts when it comes to resisting against petroleum jelly.

Vasoline(petroleum jelly) will destroy rubber and latex products. That could cause a major problem in both instances !

Jim,

Its also handy to carry a shovel around with you so that you can dig you self out the hole, when you tell your passenger/wife/police officer - that you keep the Vaseline in the car to lubricate your rubbers!! "Care to explain this??" ermm !

I used to use silicone spray which stops squeaks and helps the rubber last longer. Then I converted to GTB's and I am now much happier.

I think all Ferrari owners should carry some petroleum jelly around all the time. You never know when there will be unexpected service!

Have JRV lay hands on it and the squeak will go away never to return again.

I cannot think of a Ferrari (targa top) that does not squeek. I spray silicone (wet kind) on the seals but it only lasts a few miles.

Paul,

I can't help you with the squeaking noise but congrats on your dreamcar. It will be worth every penny.
Enjoy it as much as you can.

My '80 308GTSi has the same squeeks. It seldom bothers me because I hardly ever have to top on.
I think it is so common that no one mentions it but I could be wrong. I guess I'll find out now.

I have just realized a VERY long term dream to buy a Ferrari, I never really thought I would ever make it, but I have just bought a 1987 328GTS. I pick it up next week.
I noticed on the test drive that there is a little squeaking from the roof, it sounds like a rubber on rubber squeaking noise. I did a search but did not find anything, anyone know what the fix is ?
