I just purchased a 1985 QV and the only rust I can find anywhere is on the panels around the exhaust. You should avoid a non-rustproofed car unless you can inspect it very thoroughly. Another thing to check is the condition of the engine by looking closely under the valvecover (look under the oil fill ) My 308 had no visible wear on the cam lobes I can see and there was absolutely NO carbon buildup or dirt or anything. The surfaces inside looked like brand new metal with clear oil on them. BTW my engine has never been apart or out and has 42K miles. Just regular maintenance (Belts, lash, hoses, water pump, clutch).

You need to check shocks/ bushings and steering rack tightness. These things might not show on the outside but they will affect driveability.

I have an Alpine stereo but the overall experience of a good driving 308 makes it irrelavent.

Pass on this car. There are way too many cleaner, lower mileage examples for around $30k that you shouldn't cheap out and get a car with rust issues. From 84 on, they instituted rust proofing on 308's, so an 85 with rust is not common. From 83 back, rust bubbles on the bottom of the doors and rockers was VERY common, and difficult to fix. Nuff said...

He said it had a small 'bubble' on the rear. This is it. Looks potentially very BAD.

Well it all depends of if I can find where/who serviced the car. I sent him another message requesting the information on who stamped the car. If it was a local dealer, or reputable service shop then I can call them and verify what was done when. If the car was taken care per the Ferrari recomendedations and I can verify it with the service then that is almost the same as having the receipts.

The reason the 2nd owner does not have the receipts is because the car was bought from a bank on a repo. In fact, the original owner has tried to buy it back from them but he doesn't have the $$ to buy it. It's possible he has all the records.

As I said, a major was just completed on the car, and I've got the name of the service mechanic for the recent work and phone number.

Also, a PPI would be done before I even bother to fly out and look at it.

Makes me wonder, you said they've had it for 10 months...they know what this car needs, that's why they're not doing it themselves. Where is the original steering wheel? Prepare to throw another $10-15K at it if it needs suspension and to change all hoses.

Mike, read Sean's original post at the bottom of this page: "I did call and talk to the owner. The car has all the books and stamps for service performed, but no receipts."

Don, it does say "all records"... so I don't know what your caution would be about "no receipts, run don't walk". Records would mean maintenance records and receipts.

If the car comes with records of regular maintenance, there is no reason to not get it.

Make sure the clutch, Belts, and water pump are fresh. Those are the money repairs. Ask about oil leaks. If it is leaking from the cam seals it will need to get fixed at that involves a timing belt replacement $$$$

Other than the obvious questions regarding the maintenace and car of the car, do I even want to consider a 308 with 80K miles on it?

Provided it's been well cared for, I've read where these cars are still good even with that kind of mileage. The obvious + side is that the purchase price will be significanly lower than a 30-40K vehicle, however that could be eaten rather quickly by having to fix old stuff.

Feedback appreciated.

EDIT: Didn't get much response on the general so I thought you technical types might be of more help.

I did call and talk to the owner. The car has all the books and stamps for service performed, but no receipts. I asked them to track down who stamped it if possible so I could call whomever serviced the car. The second owner has had it for 10-months with a parter, and they've decided to sell and get something else (one parter would like a newer Ferrari - feels the 308 is too raw for his tastes).

The paint is good with one flaw at the rear buttress/fender where there are some small bubbles. It has new tires and a complete major serivice (belts, tensioners, water pump, etc...)

thanks
