The gears are back inside along with a new 2nd and 3rd syncro ring. 4th and 5th were still in spec so I didnt replace them. It turns out that 2nd had been replace recently by the PO once I had it in my hand. I chose to use the new ones because I already ripped them out of the packages. You can see the darker ring is the 3rd and if you look closely you can see the points on the grooves that line the inside of the ring are flat rather than sharp. Thats what wears out over time and they dont grab the cone clutch on the gear properly causing a grind or stubborn shift. I know the thing needs a bath, Ill clean it after its together. I had an axle seal go for a crap and thats what made the mess.

Newman, Thanks for the info on having to pull the engine. One more question, what do the synchro rings cost these days? Best wishes on completion of the job, Andy |

I had no problem shifting in any gear other than 3rd. The syncros are of a very different design than the 2nd/3rd set up. I will check the clearances and cross my fingers that they are within specs. If not, I will replace them because Im tired of pulling this engine and yes, it has to come out to do the gearbox. It would be almost impossible to do it in car judging by the b.s. involved in removing the gears. |

Great shots of the gearbox and components. Does the engine/trans have to come out of the car to do this? |

Did you check 4th syncro? For some reason, I've seen quite a number of 308 gearboxes that had 4th shifting probs before any difficulties showed up in 3rd. Just curious. |

Modifying a 2 jaw puller to clear the case and not damage the support bearings was the biggest challenge. The bearings are overpriced as expected. Now I can replace 2nd and 3rd rings and re-assemble the box. Should shift like new now. Fortunately no damage to the dog teeth and no hidden expensive surprises.

I finally continued the removal of the gears and syncros today. you will notice the syncro ring has no gap between itself and the dog teeth of 3rd gear. It is screwed completely.
The new ring installed shows the correct gap of a good syncro assembly. |
