Mike; Thanks very much for the help. I'm not sure how "easy" it will be to repair since its packed against the firewall but..... what has to be must be! Mike, are you of the opinion the VR and alternator are domestic level components? At one time I thought they may have been TRW? Any input? Thanks again and I'll hit the archives. Brad

Bard, 13.4 is a tad low, but not unacceptable. Above 1k RPMs, say, mine charges 13.9V +/- .1V. What is more of a concern is any electrical fluctuation you have. In February, I had my alternator rebuilt and voltage regulator replaced, also upgraded the output of the alternator. Cured a whole host of problems and electrical anomalies, not the least of which was a cooked battery after 17V of "charging." It's cheap insurance. I'm pretty sure the failing alternator / VR was key in my ignition coil intermittent failure which caused me to crack a header and ruin a cat. Hey! Where'd that $2,000 go that I had laying around! Oh yeah... Now I remember. I'd get it rebuilt if you suspect anything. It's easy, and non-ferrari specific--any good shop in town can do it. Critical to get the right VR part number for your car. Search the archives on "voltage regulator" (on "AND" mode) and you'll find more than you cared to know . Good luck, --Mike |

I have an '86 Testarossa. I've been told the recharge from the alternator is around 13.4 which is substandard. I recently had my 4 ways on and noticed my fuel pumps pulsate somewhat. Any feed back on proper charge levels and has anybody rebuilt the alternator, or replaced the voltage regulator? |
