Mike,

This is like deja vu. I went through this last year to replace the sealed beams with E-code Carellos. I hope it's a while before I have to change a bulb!

Had I been more resourceful, I would have gone straight to my 78/79 308 GTB/GTS parts manual. Here's the diagram of the headlight assembly, for future reference. You can see it's different than the QV's. Better tell Keith Bluemel for the next edition of Ferrari V8, eh? :-)

Mike and Greg,

Thanks again so much for your help.

Most of my problems were due to differences in the Carbed 308's and the QV 308's lighting assemblies--they're QUITE different!

Mine has two screws on either side for what could be called a REAR cover. To get access to the three small metric screws that just need to be loosened, you have to remove the ENTIRE bucket, total of four screws for the rear cover, plus four for the bucket; the bucket is also secured by two additional bolts insite the assembly itself.

That was where much of my confusion came into play. I eventually figured things out by removing the entire bucket and then it became very clear how to get the headlight out.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Mike, for what it's worth, I just did this a couple of evenings ago, super easy. Mike C's instructions should be all you need. The three small screws he talks about loosening but not removing...those are M3*10cm. Mine were pretty rusty and you can find them at Lowes if you want to replace them.

Hey, you KNOW who to ask! ;-)

(1) Pop your headlights up

(2) Take out the four painted large philips screws on the side of the housings. Once you've done that, you will be able to slide the "L" shaped painted portion of the headlight housing off that you don't see when your headlights are down. It takes a little wiggling... pull downwards first slightly (only about 1/8") to release the top part first and then you'll be able to tilt it out. That will expose all the stuff you need to get to.

(3) Take a small philips head screwdriver and loosen (do not remove) the screws that hold on the small chrome retaining ring that goes around your sealed beams. If I remember correctly, there are three, at around the 8:00, 1:00 and 4:00 positions. Look carefully, as there are those screws that secure the retaining ring, and there are also OTHER screws that are for your headlight positioning adjustment which you do NOT want to mess with.

(4) When the retaining ring screws are loosened, you will be able to rotate the retaining ring so that the slots put the larger holes over the screw heads. It only takes about a quarter inch of rotation. When they're lined up, pull out the retaining ring.

(5) With the retaining ring off, your headlight bulb will easily slip out towards the front bumper. Be careful if it's hot! Pull it out a few inches, and reach around behind the bulb and wiggle off the 3-prong wire socket.

(6) Replace with new bulb or H4-style housing and reassemble in reverse order.

If you get stuck or that's not clear enough, email me with your phone number and I'll be glad to help you via voice on Saturday. In my 308QV manual, it has diagrams of how to do all that in the "electrical" section. I'll try to scan them for you.

For the life of me, I cannot seem to remove my 308's headlights to change the bulb.

Actually, I'm replacing the lamps themselves--so I need to remove the whole headlamp.

I can get access to two adjuster screws, but there are two or three other screws holding on a metal brace for the lens housing that I have NO way of getting access to.

Anybody done this before? 78 308 GTS.
