In areas that have emissions testing, we are stuck with keeping cats on the cars. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations on replacing the old cats with high flow aftermarket units?

I need to have my catalytic converters rebuilt (83 QV). Does anyone have recommendations on where to have that done?

Thanks,

Tony

Borla no longer makes exhaust systems for Ferraris.

I bought a Stebro muffler, My 7 year old boy could do a better welding job than they could, I had to make my own tips, replace their very restrictive ones they supplied, and made my own,I didn't like the fact that my Ferrari sounded like a Ford Tempo, With my new tips I made(just the inserts) at least it sounds ok now.....Make sure you don't pay in advance , I waited over 6 months for delivery that they promised in 2 weeks, they never completed my Cats that were included with the purchace price, not impressed at all, Borla would be a better choice, .......just my experiance with them......and the last

I ran the Stebro muffler on my 348, and it was a LOT lighter than the stock two muffler system for one thing. Also, the exhaust note was very nice. Stock, the car sounded way too mellow. Then I went a step further and installed the Setbro "euro resonators" and MAN! The sound is just freakin' lovely. Just a nice throaty tone, and when you put a load on it, the sound just goes right up my spine. I love it! I think it's the way the car should sound. A great investment IMO.

Of course we used to brief our deployed troops:

Go green, keep it clean.

Or something like that...

Russ,
Sorry no pre-tubi numbers, we are a cheap lot.
Interesting, I have never heard the Stebro, but folks who have say they are louder than the Tubi, unless you add their special resonator inserts for he tips, which quiet it back down. Putting the cat back on, will quiet down your exhaust... :-)

Dave
Interesting Dynojet comparisons. Do you have any pre-tubi numbers?

Dan at Stebro was saying that they had seen some manifold cracks with catalytic converter overheats. Having gone single bank ignition before, I can tell you that they can turn bright orange and spit fire and my manifolds still survive.

I do like my tubi sound, just wish there was less of it. Stebro also said their mufflers were a 'throatier tone', but quieter than tubis. Any Stebro owners out there?

best

BTW, I have a 87 328 now, with a Tubi, cat and K&N, a friend has a 328 with Tubi, K&N and no cat. His car pulled 212hp at the wheels on a Dynojet and I pulled 214.5

Granted I could remove my cat, and make 5 more hp, who knows...but i doubt it.

Russ,
Other than the 95/96 355's, I have never heard of manifold cracks as being a problem. At least not so much that it would require removal of the cat as a preventive measure.

I HAVE removed the cats on a 78 308 GTS, and spoken to a couple others who did the same (78 and 79 308) and they found no difference in performance, just a louder exhaust note. I confirmed this with a dyno test later.

Have heard different stories -
with newer technology cats the flow restriction is minimized over the earlier more restrictive 70s versions. There was clearly an improvement in replacing earlier technology cats, however many maintain there is no palpable improvement, or reason, to replace late model (late 80s+) converters...
Then I've heard some say (at a major Ferrari dealer no less)that taking off the cat on a late 3.2 will, and I quote, "transform the car". Quite a temptation for us Mondial owners. :-)
What it will do for sure (according to Stebro)is lower exhaust system temperatures and make it far less likely to get a manifold crack or other heat related damage.
I did feel (and hear, by God) a difference when I put on a TUBI muffler, and will be installing a Stebro 'Euro resonator' replacing my cat this summer. Will let you know my experience.
Another option is the hyper-cat folks, which are sold by a fine sponsor of this website I believe.(recommend you do a search so mlemus doesn't put that annoying animation back up.. :-) :-) )
best to all,

It will make little difference performance wise, but does add a throatier sound to the exhuast note.
