So is it just a matter of getting a new main shaft once it breaks and replacing it, or does it destroy everything inside, hence the need for a new transmission.

I spoke to my mechanic & he tells me that BBLM race cars had similair failures and were constantly snapping main shafts. for a 12 or 24 hr race they HAD to install a new shaft before the race.

Hard drag race launches Will snap the shaft quickly. Road racing the cars will also cause the shaft to snap but it will take quite a bit longer than drag racing. Took me around 40 track days between the last shaft repair & this one

The main shaft is designed to snap, it acts like a fuse & snaps to save the transmission from being destroyed

David as for your friend, well thats what you get when you buy parts from Ferrari. I know I can find a trans sooner & for a lot less than the factory wants

I had a friend toast the transaxle in his 512TR; this is apparently not uncommon. The local dealer installed a 512M transaxle as the upgrade/fix. It was not cheap, I think it came in around $25k parts/labor, and it took four months for FNA to deliver on the part...

So what does it take to break one of these shafts on a 512TR/M? I have heard they are weak, but how much do you have to abuse it before it actually breaks? Will doing 0 to 200Kph drags (not actual tyre burnouts) do the trick, or is it more the driving on the track that eventually will break it? is it something that will fail after repeated racing or just fail due to a shock load?

Thanks, JRV, I suspect the main shaft as it went last time & it was fried on the 512TR that I bought to rebuild as a racer also

It should, they were essentially the same car. But installing the M Lmtd Slip Diff would be just as viable of a solution if in fact that's what went south on yours (sounds likely).

Sorry to hear about the mishap btw.

I don't know about the whole trans as I don't have a 512TR (yet)!, but I do have a friend with a 512TR who had a beefier M input shaft installed in his trans. He made it seem like it was a straightforward swap. If I recall, it has something to do with the number of splines on the shaft that related to its strength. Although I could be completely wrong, in which case disregard everything I just said. :-)

Some of you have read how i blew up my 512TR trans at Sebring at the Annual Meet. So does anyone know if a 512M trans will bolt onto a 512TR engine ? Thanks
