Bill, your problem is probably different but that is what was happening to my car before the new valve. It was warm/hot for a while, especially when idling, then it would return to ambient temp when the car was moving, then to cool, then back to warm when the car was stopped, etc.

I had no idea what was wrong and was convinced it was the switch or other electrical controls. Replacing the valve solved everything however.

I played with it some today and I think my problem is different. The heater does blow hot for a few minutes a couple of minutes after startup then goes to just slightly warmer than ambient air. If I run the A/C a couple of minutes then go back to heat it is hot for a short period then back to warm. It acts like the thermostat (since there is a temperature sensor to the left of the steering wheel on the dash) thinks it is warmer in the car than it really is.

Any ideas to fix? I am thinking about ohming the temperature sensor and adding a series or parallel resistor to make the car think it is colder than it really is?

Bill, I had what sounds like the exact same problem. First I had the heater control potentiometer (the temp selector) replaced. That turned out to be no help. Then the heater control valve near the engine was replaced and that did the trick.

Evidently this valve controls the flow of heated coolant to the heater core from which the air is heated to blow in the vents.

I am sure that there is someone that can provide a much more accurate and detailed explanation of what the valve does but this did the trick and now the heater works fine. You access this valve from the rear wheel well on the drivers side.

Valve cost about $350 as I recall and install labor was about $150. These amounts are from my memory and are probably not exactly correct but in the ballpark.

Hope this helps.

The heater on my mondial worked fine today when the wife and I left on a 150mile trip. About 20 minutes into the trip only cool air. After turning the "A/E" button off and on a couple of time it would be warm (not hot) for a couple of minutes then get cold again?. The car coolant was obviously warm.

She reminded me after taking a hot bath when we got home that women like "create comforts" and "F" in F-Car did not stand for Ferrari in her mind!!!

Where do I start on this? Does coolant always circulate throught the heater core and air is directed through it when the heater is on by a servo? Or is there an electro valve that opens and closes the flow to the heater core? Could this be a fused circuit that's blown (everything else in the car works)? Heater has never been "HOT"...

Thanks,
Bill
