Matt, The bushing that I had replaced was at the base of the shifter shaft that connects to the shaft going to the transmission. The bushing fits into what looks like a small "U" joint. I asked my mechanic, while he had it apart, to replace any and all "o" rings or rubber bushings (you know...the ones that cost $60.00 to $80.00 each). I was informed that there were no other plastic or rubber bushings to replace other than that one part #108214. In my parts book, the exploded drawing looks to be a pretty straight forward repair...but I ruined a 72 Datsun 510 by thinking I could be "Joe Mechanic"...so I let the experts work on my Ferrari. Found the service bulletin. Follow this link: http://members.tripod.com/~ferrari308gt4/updates.html It has some scanned bulletins supplied by Rob Garven. Scroll down all the way to the shifter bulletin. Unfortunately, there is no reference to the bushing, but it does show how it is put together. PS - This web site is what got me interested in Ferraris. It turned out that the car shown was only 90 miles from where I live. I visited Jim and he even let me drive the car! |

Matt: I have no idea on how you replace the bushing (or even if it's the problem!!). But I vaguely recall an ancient service bulletin (was written on parchment paper) for early GT4s that had shifter noise. I *think* it involved this bushing. I'll look for it. |

Hans, It was pepsi so do I have to take the shifter assembly apart? Steve, I had a shift boot replaced in Sept of last year. I forgot which one though. I think it was the one that went into the engine.

Matt: The bushing that Bruce is referring to is where you spilled the Coke last year. (and, no, I'm not kidding!) |

I believe that there are typically 2 (somewhat) flexible bushings in the shift shaft linkage assembly (one inboard near the back of the shifter box, and one outboard in the end of the shiftshaft that sticks out of the powerplant) -- do verify that yours are quasi-healthy, or replace, prior to making linkage adjustments -- JMO. |

Bruce, You describled it better then I could. Is that part under the shifter? or towards the gearbox? Matt |

The Don, Hopefully, my recently corrected problem will have a relation to your problem. My 81 308 developed an irrating "buzz" in 3rd and 5th coiming from the gear shift shaft. It would go away if I did the "death grip" on the shifter ball, but that was kind of impracticle to drive around like that all day long. :-) The car shifted just fine. I determined the shaft was definately NOT rubbing against the shift gate. I took my car to my mechanic last December and he did some linkage adjustments from under the car. To no avail, I drove it home still buzzing. I posted to this chat my frustration and, thanks to Ric Rainbolt, got his suggestions that corrected my problem! Turns out there is a small bushing at the base of the shifter shaft that is prone to degradation. Its part #108214 and can be ordered from Rutlands for $7.02. Rick discribed the bushing as rubber, but I found it to actually be a hard plastic. I had my mechanic install it last week and VIOLA!!! the buzz went away and the car shifts a bit smoother than before. I am not mechanically inclined, so did not want to try and tackle the job myself, but my mechanic charged me 3 hours to install the part. Again, my noise was a definate BUZZ and not a TAT TAT TAT as you described...but your symptoms seem similar. Good Luck...hope this helps Bruce McKinney 81 308 |

interesting, just a guess but maybe one of the forks is bent or out of alignment and when in neutral is butting up against another?? |
