Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh im not sure. I honestly dont remember the part number now. Will take a look at the compressor later. Right now everything is apart again. As you can see from the photos, there is no way to get the AC lines attached to the new compressor. Thus, I removed the lines and had new ones made. While I had the gas tank, alternator, cam belt covers other stuff off.... I decided to go ahead and fix my exhaust leaks. Now all the exhaust is off, the air injection manifolds have been plugged, the heat shield removed and the headers sent out to be ceramic coated. Also, the cam covers and cam belt covers are being powder coated red. Im also rebuilding an jetting the carbs, replacing the cam belts and detailing everything. I hope to be putting it back together again soon... perhaps this weekend. Throw me an email Walt, Saturday may be a good day to work on it some. Terry |

It can use either. You can buy a Sanden that is pre-oiled with 134a oil or you buy them dry, with R-12 ref. oil. There are many different Sanden models, even many different SD-508s. |

Something I'm not clear about. Does the Sanden use R12, or R134? Or either? |

Regarding Shumi's question if this will work on a 400i. I think so, but I'll let you know. I am working on this for an upgrade to a '83 400i. Jeff is correct; the Sanden is not a true rotary compressor. The Sanden is a 5 cylinder compressor with the pistons driven by a wobble plate. The York is a 2 piston reciprocating compressor driven by a conventional crank shaft. I don't pretend to understand why, but the Sanden is universally regarded to be more efficient. The bracket for the Sanden to York conversion is readily available on the net. Do a Google search on "York to Sanden conversion" and you should get several sites that have them available. Pricing is in the $30-$40 range.

The Sanden is a 507 or a 508,the 507 is a little shorter, its not a true Rotary which run about 450.00, the Sanden uses 1/3 the hp of the York piston type |

Is it a rotory style compressor? My early Sciroccos used a non-rotory compressor that you have to turn off to go up a hill. My later Scirocco has a rotory type that is so smooth that I forget it's on sometimes if it's turned on low. The difference is amazing. |

The York compressor robs power very badly. This is much much less. More efficient IMO. |

I will have to check on the total cost. I replaced all of my A/C hoses, new drier, exp. valve, new compressor, new charge ports, etc. |

I got mine at a Local A/C shop. NAPA may sell them. I am not sure about Auto Zone or Pep Boys. It cost around $35 or so. Like I said you may want to change the bolts. Mine came with bolts. |

Is the York to Sanden conversion bracket available at the same a/c shops usually? |

You can get them anywhere that sells A/C parts. You need a York to Sanden Conversion bracket. I bought different bolts that were longer as I wanted to keep the rubber gromets. I also purchased new nuts etc. I bought a Dayco belt at Pep Boys. |

Where can you purchase a Sanden compressor? Will it come with all the necessary attachments? |

The Sanden comes with the clutch/pulley. It fits fine. I used a shorter length belt and am not using the idler pulley (a/c belt tensioner). |

Sorry, I know this has been covered in the past but I came up dry searching the archives. When converting from the York A/C compressor to the Sanden, what have people been doing about a clutch or more specifically what have they been using for pulleys. Does Sanden offer a clutch with the correct pully width for the narrow Ferrari belt? |
