Greg -- Maybe $6K to make the changes and $5K to take them off?

My boxer was imported back in 84 and dot/epa fee's were about $7000, no side marker lights,no instruments were changed, no cats and had the original muffler on it. I dont know if it made a difference but ever since i had it, my car had diplomatic plates from 1984 to 1995 and in 96 is were all my problems started there was no way the car will pass a visual and actual smog inspection, since then i've always have somebody to grease to pass it.

From my personal Euro car experience, I recall the following:
1986 Euro TR
Speedo converted to mph. Odo still km's.
Side impact bars in doors(joke)
O2 sensor installed. Wired to a "black box" under seat. Box wired to the cold start injector, if I recall correctly.
Cats installed aft of the headers.
1985 Euro 930S
Only modification I could find was an O2 sensor, all else Euro spec. All the DOT/ EPA docs were in order.
1976 Euro 930
No modifications noted. All EPA/DOT docs correct.

Martin, I've really never worried at all...I've simply been trying to figure out what the original $11K paid for? All of the normal things that convert a euro to a US are still euro...not that I'm complaining!

Greg,
your car sounds like a "grease" conversion (grease the DOT guy).

I would not worry too much. Enjoy and have fun!

The conversion was done by Nastasi Racing in the Northeast. I called them, but after 20+ years, they have no info on my car and don't remember. I'm not sure that major $$$ were spent on this car, I just figured that all cars being DOT'd in the early eighties were gouged.

Doug, I have had the same question about my euro '84 308QV. Basic exhaust system (no cat), no steel bar running through the door (my door is super light when compared to a US spec car), no additional lights, the bumper is euro, my instruments and guages are metric...

They did however place a very small "Unleaded Fuel Only" decal next to the fuel cap!

Doug - it was to comply with smog emissions (EPA) through the addition of an air pump and catalytic converter, fuel vapor recycling, safety glass (usually standard by 1981). The door reinforcement, bumper height, hazard warning light, side reflectors, instruments (in non-metric form), and red tail lights (versus orange and red - all DOT). I am sure I am missing some components, but these jump out at me.

You ask, "Where did the money go?" Who did the DOT/EPA inspection?

I have an '81 512bb carbed car with DOT and EPA cert and papers. What exactly was done in the process? My car has no additional bumpers or lights. The only add I can find is a 1/4" x 2" steel bar that runs the length of the door between the inner panel and the outer skin. Don't think it would help too much in a side impact. I heard people spent $$$ to make legal. Where did these dollars go? just curious.
