Rob:

There seems to be a lot of sources for oil analysis, but I use Larry Turner. REAL nice guy. If you're a wuss like me, order the kit with the bellows - you just suck the sample out of the dipstick, rather than trying to capture oil draining out the plug. Total no-brainer, as the suction bellows, hose, pre-addressed mailer, and everything else is included.

Rob,

You can go to the Ferrarilist. There is a man there named Larry Turner who does them. He has posted a couple of results on the "List" at different times. I will try to find his URL but I am sure if you just go on and ask for him, he will contact you.

Rob: Oil analysis is well worth doing. I also found too much gasoline in my oil (and you could smell it too) that way. My car is a QV, pointing to a couple of injectors that needed replacing.

Check out http://youroil.net/
That's where I had mine done... the owner, Larry Turner, is very helpful.

William, if you call K+N and give them the dimensions of the filter you need, they will make it for you. No difference in cost also.

I had an oil analysis done at 2400 miles on my K&N equipped carb car using Mobil 1 15W50. I don't have the numbers at hand, but it showed very little contamination of any kind, except fuel. Damn Webers.

I don't have the analysis at my fingertips, but note that Mobil 1 shows an odd "contamination" of Boron and Magnesium. I thought it was just me until I looked at a table of analysis results, and the same "contamination" showed up for everyone using Mobil 1. Probably just part of their additive package. Silicon (dirt) was very low.

Ben, what are you doing up this late? Umm, what am I doing up this late, I'm two hours ahead of you. Oh yea, working on FC.

I think without a doubt that a K&N protects more than no air filter at all, however, I agree that the air isn't as clean. The question is whether it's significant enough with frequent oil changes to not use a K&N.

Have you done more oil analysis. I knew you did this before, but you only had a couple samples and wanted to do some more tests.

Rob,

next time do a dyno run with NO air filter, wonder how close the K&N comes to that. You already know my opinion.

Yes, I think I'll take more advantage of it as I think I'm running a little lean now. Does this adjust automatically in a 328 or does my mechanic need to do it?

I have used K&N on four different cars and one motorcyle. I have found little difference other than some intake noise. With my carb 308 and motorcycle, rejetting did make a noticeable improvement.

Both, my 328 and a friend's dyno'd at 214.5 and 212 respectively with K&N's and Tubi's. His also had a cat test pipe.

I have one on my 88 328. I have not put it on a dyno but I can tell the difference by the "seat of my pants". At our local track I found myself shifting up a good 20 feet earlier on the front straight and carrying about 5-7 mph more into turn 1 after putting in the K&N than before with the UFI stocker. The car seems to tach up quicker, although I'm sure the Tubi has alot to do with that as well!

I installed 1 in a chevy suburban I used to own & immediately saw the power curve drop 200rpm so that power would kick in sooner. had 1 in my mitsu VR4 as well and liked it there too. Too bad they dont make them for the 512TR or I would use them there also

I agree, not seat of the pants noticable, although the sound changed with a little more intake noise. I like the sound, almost a little whistle like a turbo. The dyno shows real gains though.

I have had K&N Air Filters in my '69 911, '72 240Z, 82 308 GTSi and Hyundai Accent. Did not notice one iota of differnce in performance in any car but the Hyundai. Gains just may not feel as noticable in higher performance cars ....

I am considering putting in an K&N airfilter on my 348 challenge, anyone done this yet and had it dyno'd before and after?? what type of gain should I expect? I plan to dyno my car sometime next week and will post the graph here.
