After you put the new pad on, and before leaving the safety of the garage, step hard on the brakes 6 or more times just to make sure the pads are snuggled up to the rotors. Take the car for a short drive in a safe place (like a deserted parking lot). At reletively low velocity (like 20 MPH) hold down on the gas and brake hard, release and repeat until the car brakes in a straight line. This gets the initial shape of the rotors onto the pads. (This should take 3-5 minutes) At this point, there are two schools of thought a) be nice to the pads and brake them in slowly over 200 miles or so--driving normally*, and b) progressively nail them harder and harder with sufficient time between events to cool. I used method a) to set the DS2500 pads I now run, but even with 200 miles the pads were not broken in by my first track event--they were by the second! *driving normally means like any old joe in a camry, not like your typical Ferrari driver. |

I just go out on a country road with little traffic, and do it the way Porterfield suggests on their website's FAQ: Is there a bedding in procedure for your pads? Yes. The Carbon Kevlar pads have a bedding in procedure. Make light to medium deceleration stops to slowly heat up disc. This must be done slowly to avoid thermal shock to the disc. Make a series of hard stops, allow to cool slowly. The light to medium deceleration stops I do on the way to getting to the country road. The hard stops, which do the final bedding, I do when I get there. I take a leisurely drive home to allow it to cool slowly.

I'm throwing on a new set this weekend for another track event. I have done the break in several different ways over the years. What do you guys recommend, especially for high-end performance pads like Porterfields, etc.? |
