Nope, I have the yellow (-) XR700 wire going into one terminal of the stock Magneti resistor and out the other terminal goes to the negative terminal of the coil.

Peter,

Did you wire the ballast resistor to the positive lead into the coil, taking it off the negative side where it is connected in the stock application? Don

Don, the manual says if the units get hot, then you need to install the resistors. I have 'em on mine...

I have just installed the XR 700 optical triggers. I left the original ballast resistors in place but they are not in the circuit since in the stock application the ballast resistors are used on the ground side of the coils. When I tired to put the resistors in the circuit on the ground side the XR 700s did not work. I have noticed that my coils are very hot and XR 700 were pretty warm and almost hot. Is this normal or do I need to install the ballast resistors on the positive (power 12v) feed into the coils? Great thread on the issue- thanks for bringing it up Don

Don I believe it replaces the points and you are right it is an optical system. There is a plastic wheel that sits on the dist. cam and it has 4 slots in it. There is an optical componet that sits where the points use to be and the wheel makes and breaks the optical beam which acts the same way as the points. They are only a switch. I believe that Crane uses a "box" where it switches the coils. You need 2 Crane kits for the 308. I think this is how it works.

Steve,

The Crane XR700 is a optical point replacement for the cap and rotors.

Not familiar with the Crane XR7000 set up but with a breakerless ign. why would you use a step down (ballast) resistor ? The initial reason for a ballast resistor was to get a full 12 volts to the plugs for a hot start up. The resistor is by passed on start and when you let the ign. key go to the run position the resistor reduces the voltage . The reason is the points cannot take the high voltage for long periods of time or they burn up. Also unless the coil is designed to run this voltage it will also fail because of heat. So if you get a high output coil you defeat the purpose if you use a ballast resistor. So Don I would suggest that you go for a breakerless ign. system and a high output coil(30-40K volts)and then you can open up the plug gap to allow for a greater spark . My thoughts here

Matt: "...Do the Accel coils come with new bassast?"

They usually don't, but if you need them, just re-use the original Magnetti ones.

To check whether you need resistance or not, measure the resistance of the coil primary terminals (the two small screw terminals). You should have around 1.5 ohms. If not, install the resistors (check them too to see if they work - same process).

I am still running points.

Do the Accel coils come with new bassast?

Are you running points still or XR700s? If you are using XR700s you will need to keep the ballast resistors.

Matt, unless they specificaly state that they require 'ballast resistors' you would leave them off.

Some coils require the use of ballast resistors, many don't. Double check with your installation instructions (if any) otherwise just put them on.

I am going to change my coils out with the accel 8140's.

I did a seach on them but I did not find the answer to which I was seeking. Are they a straight swap out or do I need to remove the ballast?

I am going to run hotter plugs and regap to .35

I am also running the stock wires.

TIA
Matt
