I like Rob's idea best. In any event we are driving after this ritual, right? We would be disappointed if you followed the steps to a "T", drove for 2 blocks, and put it back into hibernation for another 6 months. Enjoy!

My technique has evolved with time. There are times when I just "go" after a minute of warmup--but then I go easy.

I'm most comfortable with 30seconds of 2000-3000 rpm with the gas right after start; my cue to stop this is when RPMs rise with the gas pedal in a constant position.

Then, ideally, three minutes or so of idle, but not much more. I'm most comfortable once the water temp comes up to the first mark.

Until the oil temp hits its first mark, its below 3k or 4k rpm. Then I'll start hitting 5k until I get a little more movement (past the first mark), then I'm pretty much open for anything, if you know what I mean, baby!

1) 3am wake up and go to garage to turn light on for low intensity heating.
2) 5am wake up again and turn heater in garage up to 85 degrees from climate controlled 75 degrees.
3) 6am start rubbing gently the outside casing with your hand.
4) 7am start rubbing more vigorously the outside casing.
5) 8am pre oil the engine and start her up.
6) 8:05am slowly drive below 3k for 5 minutes and 4k until oil temp up.

For warming down reverse all steps.

Take it up to 7,000 rpm, drop the clutch & do a wicked Burnout Dude!!!!! LOL actually better not

I just drive but keep the revs under 4500 till the oil warms up a bit, 4500 rpm is where the powerband really kicks on on the 512TR

Start it up , back it out of the garage , drive.
Usually need to avoid 2nd gear but as long as you have oil pressure you're good to go.

I let both of them idle until the first smidgen of movement of the oil temp gauge. Then I drive off easily ast it warms further.

statrt it, and while it idles for a few minutes I push clutch in and shift into all gears a few times, then idle a little more, then drive under low RPM until up to operating temp.

depends on outside temp but J scott pretty muchg has it, prob don't need to idle for more than a mintue as long as you take it slow for the first couple of miles. The gearbox will warm up with tiime, on 80s cars some skip 2nd for the first few mintues

P.S. I'm not that worried about the transmission, it is the engine oil that I want warmed up.

I start the car and let it idle for an couple of minutes before taking the car out. Then I don't drive over 3500 RPM until the oil temp gage starts to move. At that time, usually about 4-5 miles, I'm ready to go! Total time to complete warm-up is about 10 minutes. I've been told that this is the proper warm-up proceedure. Curious if this is incorrect. If the car sits at idle for very long the battery drains and the oil never gets warm.

I've tried that...works pretty well. :-) After that first ever important step, how long would you say it is before the transmission is warm.

I've heard some different things. Which f-car do you have and how do you do it? warm it up that is.
