Thanks for the feedback. I think you all are right, the oil level cold was at MIN and warm above MAX. I removed enough to get the level mid-range when warm, and when cold it is barely visible on the dip stick.

Thanks for the help, this is the least expensive thing I have ever had to "fix".

Scott,

Mitch is correct. I have 1990 TR -- max is too much -- 1/2 way between min and max and oil leaks go away. Also remember for an accurate reading to check oil, preferably with engine running at idle or 30 seconds after shut down (min oil temp at check 160). I see no need to change oil, just oil level.

I used to keep my oil at max until I got to an FCA track event where the chief Ferrari tech(Guessipie Risi) shook his head and indicated that 'max' is too much oil--representing the maximum amount of oil before it gets sucked into the intake as/with blowby. 1/2 way between max and min is where it really should be.

Scott -- If you've got the TR Workshop Manual see page C10, Fig 9 and check if the tube #2 (from the crankcase to the airbox) is somehow kinked/obstructed. If you remove tube #2 from the front of the airbox (with engine running) do you get a very large volume of oil vapors coming out?

Thanks Don,
The dip stick skows MAX, but not over. I am going to change the oil and add the appropriate amount to insure the correct volume.

The service manual shows a "waste gate" which I thought may be a problem if it isn't "opening", but I haven't had a chance to locate it and determine how to test its functionality.

I appreciate the feedback, and from reading other peoples experiences on this site after finding it today I feel like I have been led out of the wilderness. I am not the only one with sporadic "mice" and idle issues (mine won't idle down below 1200 = 1400 when hot, it attempts to for a few seconds then kicks back up.

But how I love this car!, and that car, and that car, and that car etc.

Could your oil be overfilled?

I have a 1991 TR and it seems to have an excessive amount of crankcase pressure, causing oil leaks at the weakest point. Which currently is blow by around the oil filler cap/dipstick. Is anyone familiar with this problem?
