William, your goals are admirable. I proposed this same idea for a 308 GT car. I would use a BTCC style Xtrac front wheel drive race 'box for the 308 transverse V8 to lower the CG about 4 inches. The estimated cost of $60,000 ($45,000 was just the 'box) nix'd the deal. Packaging and manufacturing cost is why Ferrari did it this way. You're right, lowering the engine and hanging a transaxle off the end like an F50 will not work without MAJOR changes. You could move the driver forward into the center of the car to move the firewall forward. You could lengthen the wheelbase and change the coachwork. Either solution is more than it's worth IMO. But I like your thinking. |

Here's a pic of a V12 sitting on a V8 tranny...the overhang or lenght difference 12 vs 8 is about 8 inches:

or maybe a 348-355 tranny...they're lower because they have Vmotors sitting on them and compact to save rear overhang lenght.. |

ROTFLMAO...... I was only half joking though....Ferrari has been dropping the engines in the Street-to-Race Car chassis for a lower center of gravity as far back as at least the 250SWB's..... Do you have a friend with a cad cam and overlay program? Some designs could be sketched up and overlayed on a computer to see what type of fit you could come up with. JRV gave me this brainstorm. The TR engine sits directly on top of the trans. WHat the H was Ferrari thinking when they designed the first 365BB like this ? Now Ive seen 308s where they turn the engine so it sits longitudinally and they hang the trans out back under the trunk. So, given a reasonable budget, say under $30k. would it be possible to buy a nice 5 or 6 speed race trans and hang it out the back thus allowing me to drop the engine maybe 6" at least and get a much better weight distribution ? This is how Ferrari designed the 288GTO, F40, F50, & Enzo. Question is, Since the engine sits atop the half shafts how can I do this withouth chaniging the cars wheelbase ? Since I have taken out the cars fuel tanks & replaced them with a fuel cell up front I MIGHT have a few inches available that I can relocate the engine forwards |
