Jack, he said he had a mechanic, he didn't say he had a good mechanic...lol.

A really good mechanic would know that... ;-)

But basically, he should hook the car up to a tester, run it through the RPM range and compare the ignition timing "map" with the factory map (WHEN does the advance set in and how much advance does it get).

If the springs are indeed weakened (which does happen a lot), the measured advance will differ from what the factory prescribes.

Same goes for broken or detached springs.

A bent distributor axle will give irregular results (i.e. different timing on the various cylinders).

Thank you for all of you responces. At increasing rpm, the sound coming out of the muffler indicates that might be something loose inside. I will check to see if it does it at certain RPMs and post it back. Also I will have the distibutor check. By the way, what would the mechanic do, when he checks it?

JC,

can you notice a particular RPM at which the poor running sets in?

Is it over the whole RPM range or only setting in at a certain RPM?

I tend to go with JRV.

Sounds like the advance curve of the distributor is screwed up.

Could be loose or weak springs on the weights or a bent distributor axle.

I would look there first before I would go for the muffler.

<<The mechanic thinks that the exhaust baffle have fallen apart inside and is clogging the exhaust thus the poor running. He suggest replacing the muffler. Also<<

Not where I'd start looking for the problem.

I think I'd start with a Distrib Check of the advance curve operation and very likely a Distrib Rebuild.

if you have a mechanic looking at it I would think he could tell with a few tests if the muff has bit the dust - speculation costs you money

I have a 1976 308 gtb (fiberglass). Ever since I bought it (10 month ago) it has been running poorly. The car hesitates when you step on it and does not seems to have all of the power. I have rebuilt the carbs but the problem still exist. I have change the points, ignition wires and set the timming but still runs poorly. I have recently noticed that it seems that inside the muffler there is something loose that might be clogging it up. There is more hot air discharge from one side of the tips than the others. Also, a white spot that looks like white powder appeared in the middle of the muffler. The mechanic thinks that the exhaust baffle have fallen apart inside and is clogging the exhaust thus the poor running. He suggest replacing the muffler. Also, he cheched the sychronization of the carbs and found them ok.
Has anyone had this problem?. Any insights would be appreciate it. You can e-mail me at [email protected] if you want.
Thank you in advance.
JC
