OK--took it all apart and could not find anything worn or any reason for having metal flakes in the oil--but I did notice that I had left off the spring clip from the throw-out bearing----dooo--now the search begins--where did i put that &^%*% thing |

Charles, when I opened up my 2V motor I found that the bottom gear had at one time come loose. It left a ridge in the transfer gear cover. Upon inspection I found that the Previous owner simply put a new nut on it and put the cover back on. the gear had lots of little hair line cracks arount the perimeter. I've since replaced ALL THREE gears with the updated QV gears they are interchangeable only if you replace all three. In other words you can't mix the old style with the new style. You could swap out one gear only (of the same type) but It's smart to change all 3 because they would wear the same. They are extremely expensive even for used ones. I have a spare set of middle and upper gears but no lower |

Charles, I have seen your problem twice before, in supposedly professionally rebuilds. The middle gear requires a pair of thin, radially arranged needle bearings on either side.. did you remember to fit them? Another thought is the large, sortta U shaped wire spring clip on the throw out bearing actuation fingers. |

I am out of town now but will be back home this weekend--Am trying to get some kind of info together so I can form a plan of attack this weekend. will pull the gears and inspect --and see where it leads. |

Charles, I believe all the dimensions you mentioned are the same. I don't have any bright ideas of things for you to check. Is there a chance the gears are installed incorrectly, 180^ off? Are the ring nuts torqued to the correct spec?

I am using my ENTIRE set of gtsi gears on my 4v motor but there seems to be a lot of rattling noise and some serious metal sparkles in the oil. wondering if the centerline--shaft-to-shaft dimention is the same |

The difference is in the manufacturing process. Early gears were "ground", with later gears being "machined", IIRC. They are NOT interchangeable, meaning you can't mix-n-match. You have to use whole sets. |

Ratios could be different. I wouldnt be surprised because thats another way to achieve a different final drive ratio. |

I know the part numbers for the gear sets are different---just need to know what the difference between the gear sets is and if they are interchangable. |

I have just completed rebuilding a 308 4v motor and in re-assembly I installed a set of 308 gtsi transfer gears( the 3 gears on the outside of bellhousing) that I already had. I noticed a very slight rattle when ran the motor and found it to be the gears. I did some research and discovered a difference in part numbers between the 2v and 4v sets. Anyone know what the difference between the gear sets is? And has anyone run 2v transfer gears in a 4v motor?--have to modify anything?
