I hope it does help somebody -- no so much for benevolent reasons, I just want to know that somebody else made the same dumb mistake. Actually, it's easy to put it on wrong because that's how it looks like it should fit when unsprung -- I even got it on the wrong way, but the spring would pop off after pumping the brakes a few times. The best technique I could find for putting it on the right way was to anchor one side in and then use two pairs of long-nose pliers to pretension the spring to get the other side in.

In changing the pads I found that I needed to adjust one of the calipers using the spacers because the rotor was pretty far off-center. The adjustment required removing the base mounting bolts and moving the spacers. I will add a note to Rob's archived thread since this seems to be the best reference.

The good news is you got them in. Seems all F-Cars require 3 hands on any retainer (lol)

No doubt someone else will encounter the same problem and will reference your post. Thats what makes this site so great.

I finally got it on. The problem was that I had the ends of the spring in between the retainer and the caliper instead of outside of the retainer. I figured out by looking at Rob's photos in his brake pad thread. Even putting on the right way it still is taking me 15 to 20 minutes of wrestling with it, so I'm still open to suggestions on a better technique.

I am replacing the rear brake pads on my Mondial 3.2 but can not get the retainer spring back in. I get one side seated in the hole and then it pops out when I try to get the other side in. There must be some trick to this I'm missing because there are several help pages on brake pad replacement in the archives and none mention any difficulty with the spring. I think the Mondial brakes are the same as a 328. I did see Frank Lipinski's recent post about this, but the 355 springs look very different from mine.
