Thanks for the help on the shift ball removal. The "angled arms" on my 512Tr are even more severe than what Mike showed. Its like night and day on the 1-2 upshift on stoplight drags. Havn't we all at one time or another got hung up on the 1-2? |

Use a 13mm open end to hold the shifter arm from twisting. There is a set of flats on the arm near the base. The wrench slides thru the shift gate. I use some channel locks and a thick rag to keep from scaring the plastic ball. Once it broke free (someone had put blue lock-tite on the threads) it come off easily. |

Lou: It's a 17mm nut for the shift ball. Jerry: Instead of round, they're slightly angled, like this:
It helps make those "angle" shifts slightly easier, like between 1st and 2nd, and 3rd and 4th. You can use a dremel tool to grind your old shift gate to make it similar with no problem. I did mine on my 308QV about a year ago.

Lou, what exactly do you mean "angle the prongs on the shifting gate?" |

Lou--on my '85QV, I had to loosen the lock nut first. There was no way of getting the ball off w/o doing this. |

Just unscrew it counter-clockwise. It may require loosening the nut on the lower side of the ball (doesn't THAT sound suggestive...) in order to unscrew the actual ball. |

I want to angle the prongs on the shifting gate like I did on my 512TR which made it feel like a different tranny especially on the old dog-leg 1-2. |
