Differences between the Euro and the US spec cars include all of the following:

Valve Timing / Cam Profile
Ignition Timing
Exhaust System
Fuel System Pressures & Metering
Emissions Systems / Equipment

And yes, all of it was done to meet US emissions. All of these systems work in harmony --- so changes to all of them were necessary.

By advancing the exhaust cam, the period of overlap (when both intake and exhaust valves are open) is reduced. This prevents exhaust harmonics from the header from pulling fresh mixture into the exhaust and thereby reduces emissions.

Euro cars also have less weight to carry around due to the front and rear impact* absorbing bumpers.

*impact absorbing bumper ~= HorsePower absorbing weight

jeff r. -- Check the OM for whatever year/versions you're interested in -- it will have the valve opening/closing values listed in Section 1.

If memory serves me, I think the only change was on the exhaust cam timming which is only a 4 degree change. I think the the us was set at 50' and the euro was set to 54'. I would assume because of emissions. I think the euro was rated at 212hp but it would be interesting to see all the figures on it, the euro may have less power on the bottom to mid range power.

Euro Ferraris have typically 10+ more HP, one of the reasons is the exhaust, the other different cam timing

What is the difference in cam timing and why did they change it for US cars, emmissions?

Thanks
