That's funny I just removed and reinstalled my first rack and pinion today in my auto tech class. It took me and two classmates almost 2 hours. It was really a pain in the butt to access the line bolts, we had to remove all the cradle bolts and lower it about 9 inchs to get in there. It was a GM Sunfire. |

I like my new digital camera. Sorry about the size of the coupling pic. A little too large. Here is a pic that shows how the bracket mounts to the chasis. I left one of the bushings in so you can see how it fits in. These are 13mm bolts and will require a socket and an open end to get at. Plus it helps to be creative on how you get the wrenches in there. There are 2 washers I believe. One on the outside and the other that sits just between the mount and the chasis. Once you have all of these loose the rack will slide out the drivers side rather easy. As I said before I already changed my rack but I figured I would post pics since I was in there changing the bushings anyway. Enjoy!

Here is a pic of the coupling which connects to the pinion on the steering rack. I believe it is a 10mm. The coupling is a female end while the pinion is the male end. It is splined so be extra careful when sliding the coupling off. If will take a little force to get it off so take your time.

Here is a picture of what the rubber orange bushings look like. Over time they can cause play in the steering as they wear. If this happens the rack will move slightly from side to side and not hold onto the chasis as it normally would. You will need to save the brass piece as it doesn't come in the bushing set. It just slides in the bushings. The bushings are around $2.00 each and you will need eight of them.

Here is the tie-rod end. I just took the nut off of the bottom of it and it will usually just come right out. If it gives you any trouble you can tap on it with a piece of wood placed up against the bolt and tap a hammer on the piece of wood. It is a good idea to replace the tie-rod ends when rebuilding or changing the steering rack. The nut that you see attached to the tie-rod itself is a lock nut and doesn't need to be loosened at this point.

I changed my steering rack bushings today and I thought I would take some pics of the steering rack components for anyone that is interested. I just changed my rack and tie-rod ends this past fall and I had to wait for the bushings. It is best to do it all at the same time. Hopefully these pics will help in understanding the way the rack bolts to the car and be a visual representation of what one will see when they encounter this project. It doesn't take too long to do either. Let me know if you have any ?'s. |
