John, regarding the part number of the fiat part (it was for a '75 GT4) refer to http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/90497.html?1027387692#POST69639

Verell, Thanks for the reply. Just had the belts and the water pump replaced 3000 miles ago, just assumed that they were o.k. but who knows? Ill be sure to check these out. John

John,
Alternator is removable after removing passenger wheel well linerj. Next (sigh) drain coolant down enough so that you can undo the top end of the large coolant pipe that crosses diagonally in front of the alternator. Also loosten the a clamp on the bottom of the pipe just enough so it will turn in the hose, but not enough to get a massive leak.

Read these threads first:
http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/7981.html

http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/138323.html

There are a lot of other archives, but these should get U started.

BTW, there are a few other things in the same area that can produce bearing noise(ask me how I know):

- Water Pump - Look for signs of coolant and/or brown gunk dripping down thru the weep holes on the bottom of the water pump's nose.
- A/C compressor
- Cam belt idler pulley
- Timing drive gear bearing (pray it isn't so) - Look for the bottom end of the timing belt to be jumping around.

Quickest diagnosis check is to start removing belts until the noise goes away. If you get all the belts off, then a cam belt idler pulley or a timing bearing is all that's left.

BTW, if it's only an alternator bearing, you're probably only looking at about $85-$100.

Thanks for the responses guys. This site is great! (Thanks Rob) Im going to look tonight to see if the alternator is easy to get at through the passenger side wheel well. If it is, Ill take it out myself. Harry, do you know the part number for the equivalent Fiat part? Regards, John

I replaced the alternator of my GT4 with a new Bosch alternator. Actually it is a Fiat spare part and the cost was around 170$.

You probably don't need a new alternator! Lots of threads on this (see the archives); the most common solutions seems to be to remove the alternator, send it away to be rebuilt (simultaneously replacing the voltage regulator), and put 'er back in. Quoted labor is typically 1.5hrs for the removal/reinstall; rebuilding will range $100 to $200 depending on your shop including the new voltage regulator.

You may have a more fundamental mechanical alternator problem with the bearings since it's charging correctly (careful--mine was INTERMITTENTLY charging correctly!), but even the bearings should be able to be restored as well.

Good luck.

I had the alternator on my GT4 rebuilt. Total cost was around $200 for the rebuild. I don't know if removal is something you can do for yourself easily, I had my mechanic do it, so I had to pay for labor for removal and installation.

Just noticed what sounds like bearing noise coming from the alternator on the 85 308QV. The system seems to be charging properly. I just checked Jeffs U.K site for the price of a new alternator. ~$1000 U.S., yipes! Does any one have any alternate suggestions? Is there an equivalent Bosch alternator that is less expensive? Can these be rebuilt? Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated. John
