When all was said and done, that transmission sold for over $1500!!! Either the buyer knew something that nobody else on this board knows, or P.T. Barnum is at work. What's up???

The internal parts were not available to the public for that transmission. If you need a repair your choice was only to replace the unit. It is possible though that if you have a problem, you can contact FNA and they could maybe help you with internal repair of the unit.
There were no FNA schools available to Ferrari techs in the field for internal rebuild of the unit.

If the internal parts for that transmission are not available, how would a person repair such a transmission if they had one in their car? Did the later version of that transmission use entirely different parts? So if somebody broke some major parts in that "early" transmission, they would have to replace the entire transmission with the "later" version? Since that's an automatic trans, there can't be too many of those around, be it early or late model production. Still sounds like a rare bird.

I see the tag you mean and does not look familar. we did send back a couple of those units as defect and noting it does have a tag my guess it is one of those defect units.
Noting that the internal parts for that transmission are not available, this particular unit I believe is good for only a conversation piece.
Small note - The 456 GTA transmission was built for ferrari by a company in Detroit area (note the ebayers adress).

Nothing that I'm interested in, but it seemed strange that somebody would be selling a Ferrari transmission without knowing what it was or what it might be really worth. I noticed in one of the photos that there was a tag of some sort hanging on the transmission. I would think that the tag would tell SOMETHING about what it was. Somebody somewhere probably needs it regardless of its condition; for parts maybe.

I did see that but I don`t believe it`s the right number. the six digit part number should be stamped on the case along with the production number.
I believe it is either on the top in the rear of the case or on the right side next to the undercover plate. - fuzzy memory of that one.

The partnumber on the casing is in one of the pictures:

Arlie,
I agree with tom, look to me to be the 456 GTA auto transmission.
If its someting your interested in, the part number should be on the case, just ask for the numbers and check with your local ferrari dealer as to what exact transmission that is.
Also, be aware that ferrari had problems with the first of these transmissions which were replaced as whole units by ferrari and this may be one of the defective units.

best regards, and happy shopping,
Jim

Looks a little like the automatic out of a 456.

I ran across this on E-Bay?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=34208&item=2413446537

Does anybody know what it came out of, or since it looks new, what it goes into?
