Paul,

Yes the other parts are powder coated with "Mirror Silver". I can't wait to get it all back together on the car.

That is great work Tom. How many days did it take you to get the job done? As for stock. I will add lib on a line from the movie Rain Man. "Stock Sucks". Customizing the car to your liking is what it is all about.

Frank,

Painting the valves wrinkle red is not orginal either. They aren't supposed to be painted on earlier models. I believe that the TR was the first to have the valve covers painted (redheads). I like the wrinkle but this Super Red is really hard to beat. One major difference you see right away is that the wrinkle red color looks nothing like the red on the car but this Super Red Powder Coat does! The local guys here love it... they couldn't believe how good it really looks. Like Ben said it has a deep wet red look. The pictures don't even look as good as the real thing.

Tom, good for you, looks great. I bought the same powder coating set-up. I posted awhile back and doing my engine components in yellow...of course I recieved flak from it. I think the way you want to do it is the way it should be done. Dare to be different. IMO These guys who think everything should be done by the book when lined up usually all look the same (haircut, shoes pants ect) and usually believe unless the Ferrari is red (mine is yellow) it is not what Enzo intended. I can't wait till they see the Purple Pro street 308 with the narrowed rearend being built. Get Ben M. to help out with a nice 14-71 huffer on alcohol and will be tagged as redheaded step children. Now that I have opened my trap let the mudslinging begin.....

Ben, but the wet look is not original. It is an Italian exotic, not a haircut !

I like Tom's look better, very wet looking and smooth, its awsome, I bet it will really make the motor look sexy. Thats exactly how I want my parts the same color and all.

This is what I love about this site, people doing things at home, and coming up with new idea's. It great to see people trying things out instead of paying someone else to do it. Two thumbs up Tom, I love it to death, so what are you going to charge to do my parts:-)

The wrinkle finish paint used by Steve looks better IMHO. Tom, since you went to all that trouble to powder coat, why didn't you use wrinkle finish ?

Ben,

Yes you can do this... look below. I liked the way this looked better than the wrinkle.

Here are some photos of my powder coating and tips on how to do it. I want to thank Memphis Powder Coaters for helping get my start. I bought my kit from Harbor Freight but Eastwood also has a good kit. This is a fairly easy process to learn but I suggest doing several test pieces. Also, you'll want to buy an electric oven (not gas). Don't use the oven in your house!! I bought a used one out of the local newspaper for $60 and put it in my garage.

1. You need to rough up the surface so paint will adhere. I used both sandblasting and glass beading media. You'll want to use glass bead when doing smaller more fragile pieces. I had great results with Virgin Aluminum Oxide. Surface preparation is of utmost importance in any type of painting.

2. Clean parts and let them dry COMPLETELY.

3. Mask & plug parts where you don't want paint (i.e. threaded holes). Use Thermal tape not masking tape. I got mine from a local Powder Coater.

4. Hang parts from hooks. I used hangers and formed them into hooks. Attach negative clip. Wear mask and eye protection. Turn on power and spray parts evenly about 6 to 8 inches away. When done turn power off and ground negative clip to powder gun tip.

5. Take parts by hooks and hang inside oven. It's a good idea to first practice this step before you apply the paint. That way you'll know if your hook lengths are correct. You can hang them on a rack inside the oven. Some parts you can lay on the rack itself if you don't have paint underneath the part.

6. Set temp at 400F and let parts bake for 20 min. When done let parts cool slowly at room temp.

There are many different type colors available so you may find it helpful to ask a local Powder Coater about colors. I found the perfect Ferrari Red color called Super Red. It matches my car paint. I hope this helps. Check out my website for more photos under garages.

Wow those look great!!,
I would love to have that done. Is that something someone can do with little experience in that field? Could you share with us how you did that?

Hey Folks!

I've been involved with a massive project this year. This is one of many things I'm doing to my car right now. Check out our website under "Garages" and see my Powder Coat Project. It's really awesome stuff.
