Good Deal..Glad to hear that...

Let us know the final outcome...

btw-what made you suspect a bad cat in the first place? Noise, rattle, check engine light...?

Thanks everyone for your input here.

Frank - you're absolutely correct. I found the warranty information and it confirms that it's covered by a Federal 8 year/80,000 warranty on all emissions related equipment, including the cats. (I should have looked here first!)

I also misspoke when I said a bad cat has been diagnosed. In fact, this was only a preliminary diagnosis. I'm awaiting confirmation this week - we'll see...

Mr. Barnett and JJ; I suggest you get dealer tags, then replace the cats with bypass pipes.
See there, problem solved.

From http://www.sema.org/content/?ID=22238

"2. Clean Air Act Warranty Provisions (42 U.S.C. S 7541 (C) (3) (B))

The federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle makers to provide two emissions-related warranties -- a production warranty and a performance warranty. The production warranty requires the vehicle maker to warrant that the vehicle is designed, built and equipped so that it conforms with emissions requirements at the time of sale. The performance warranty requires the vehicle maker to warrant that the vehicle will comply with applicable emissions requirements as tested under state vehicle emissions inspection programs for the warranty periods specified in the law (for model year 1995 and later vehicles, the warranty is 2 years/24,000 miles for all emissions-related parts and 8 years/80,000 miles for the catalytic converter, electronic emissions control unit and on-board diagnostic device). The performance warranty is conditioned on the vehicle being properly maintained and operated."

I don't know what the prblem is with the cat, but it F doesn't cover it, you can get them "rebuilt" for much less than new.

the emissions laws are federal. seven years sounds socrrect. CA may (or may not) have a stricter law that supersedes.

Tim -

Yes, you are covered. It's in the small warranty book if you have books and records on the car.

Your good to 2004. I bought my car from F or SFO and had it shipped to FL where I live and as a precaution spoke to FNA about this issue. They told me the warranty is based on where the car was first sold and shipped to. If the car was first sold in CA, then it's a 7 year warranty.

BTW-Who said the cat was bad? An independent or an authorized dealer? Take it to your local dealer for inspection and they will work it out with FNA.

I've just had a bad catalytic converter diagnosed on my 97 355. The frustrating thing is that I had them both replaced two years ago and now the one on the right side is disintegrating again!

When they were replaced in 2001 at F of San Fran, it was a warranty item under some kind of 7 year emissions warranty. Does anyone know if this is a Federal law or is it state specific? The car is now in Colorado.

Thanks in advance,
Tim
