Philip, You're pretty close, normal valve action is to wear down the valve & seat contact area. This wear lets the valve stem move upwards toward the cam (ie: reduces/tightens the valve clearance). The clearance only increases when there's some form of build-up on the valve-seat surface.

George FYI, and without hopefully hi-jacking the thread, my exhausts valves were tight and needed to be loosened when the belts and shims were done last time. Others will know, but I think the issue is the valve minutely beating itself into the head over time. Philip |

No offense to JRV, but I've known Ric for several years now - have seen his work, have ridden in his work, and have heard and heeded his advice. My advice is to take Ric's advice and leave it alone. In another 15K miles or so, you'll be due for a major service and can check it again. Besides, if they're tight, they have room to loosen (I can't imagine the clearances will get *tighter*??). FWIW. |

The shims only come in .0025" increments...so it's not possible to make .001" changes. I'd tighten the intakes to .007-.008 and leave the exhausts alone based on your posted specs |

Leave it alone. IMHO. You might fight forever to get it closer. |

Because my WP went I decided to go through the car to make sure it is ready for the summer. So in doing a valve check here are the numbers. Intake .008"-.010" , Exhaust .012"-.014" #4 #3 #2 #1 Rear of car Intake .009 .009 .009 .009 front of car Intake .0095 .008 .011 .010 Rear Exhaust .0125 .012 .012 .0115 Front Exhaust .012 .012 .012 .0115 Car has 45k miles on it and my last check was done at 36k with almost the same results. My question is should I redo everything to mid values (.009intake ,.013 exh)or do the 2 tight exhaust valves and 1 loose intake or should I just put it back together and do the belts/bearings.
