I removed the air pumps and most of the associated plumbing from my car a few months ago. However, when I purchased the car over a year ago the pumps were frozen. The repeated heating and cooling causes the pump "flappers" (I am sure someone knows the correct term) to seize against the pump casing. Pulling it all apart after soaking in WD-40 for a couple of days and then lubricating it produced a smooth running pump. However, from the repeated heating and cooling cycles this part is exposed to when in situ, it would seem the pump needs to be run continually or removed. |

Hey Matt, Just FYI, I was doing the same thing, but then I realized I didn't see much of a performance difference with the belt on or off, so I just left it on. Of course, this is in the GT4, which is a different beast entirely Dom |

Got it Matt. Kind of a no win situation it seems. Give me a call if you have problems locating a pump. Henry |

Matt, I just took my air pump to Pep Boys and had them match it up. As mike was saying the inlet/outlet might be a little different (also some may have metric or standard thread for the hardware) but the basic pump is the same. BTW, why did you have your belt connected? Henry |

Some time ago I asked a GM dealership parts manager which cars used the air pump part # that is listed in the Ferrari owner's manual. He said that the basic pump was used in just about everything that GM made during that time period. The main difference between the various applications was the inlet and outlet adapters that are bolt-on pieces. Try taking your old one to a good auto parts store for a match up. You may be able to switch out the inlet/outlet etc. to a new pump. |

Matt, Any of the usual parts sources would have this belt. I bought them from GT Car Parts. |

Matt -- Do a search on "AirCardone" (which should get you to the threads where people have mentioned specific late 308-2V air pump vendors/PNs). |

Matt, The previous owner of my 78 308 replaced the air pump in 1998 at 47k miles, also due to seizure. There is no part number. The records indicate the previous owner supplied the part himself. Apparently, it was a GM part, and the exact replacement was listed as no longer available. There was a line item to "modify various components to fit new air pump." The pump was originally charged at $405 before the PO brought in his own replacement. I can look a little later on today to see if I can't see any information on the pump. On an unrelated note, your distributor caps look very different from mine--are those OEM? HTH a bit, --Mike |

So I am driving along and I hear this, flap.flap.flap.flap. I pull into the garage and WHAMMO! airpump seized and melted the belt around the cam drive. I know that the 81 buick rivera and early chevy camaro's used the same pump but does anyone have a specific part number for replacement?
TIA, TTFN Matt
