Paul,
Thank you for the explaning the leak down check to me. I read someone on our network saying that you should observe the test when it is done. If I didn't trust my guy enough to give me the actual results I guess I should find a different guy. Thanks again.

A leakdown test is a test of the sealing ability of the piston rings and the valves. Tired engines will let pressure by the rings and the seated valves. The best outcome is to have an engine with pressure losses similar to a new engine. The next best thing is to have all of the cylinders a little leaky but within a certain range of one another (normal wear). The most alarming result is a wide variation from one cylinder to another.

Best of luck.

Dear Jim E,
Can you be more specific as to why your experience was not good. Thanks.

Go to an independant, and find out what you're paying for before you do it! My experience was NOT good....

I will be buying my first Ferrari soon and all I hear from the knowledgable people is, you are a fool if you don't let a Ferrari Mech. inspect it first. What should a good techician check prior to my decision to purchase a specific car? About how many hours are reasonable. For older cars like the 308's they say dealer techs. will not know enough about them so go to an independent. Do you folks agree? And what is a leak down test anyway?
