Thanks for the posts AND education!! I now know that my "cats" are really heat shields. I was going off the SPC which does not show the shields, thanks again.

Frank -- your answer (one cat) is true only for the newer 308 QVs -- '78 to '82 US 308s have 2 cats. This is the exhaust system from 78 308 GTB/S:

As Peter stated, the heat shields on the header collector areas look sort of cat-like, but theyre not cats:

A U.S. version 308 and/or 328 only has one cat.

These manifolds have a fairly large sheet-metal covering over the collectors, so it can be confused with a resonator. 308's never used resonators. It sounds like you have either an earlier, or european exhaust system.

Do you have a digicam or scanner? Show us some pictures of them (they're worth a thousand words...).

I have a 1980 308 gtsi vin 33541. I am going to be replacing my exhaust system and thought I was runnimg without cats because when I viewed the spare parts catalogue (SPC) table 16 it shows the cats stacked side by side and behind the rear bank then going into the muffler. Well when I briefly looked at mine I did not see the stacked cats and thought I didn't have any. NOW**!! upon closer inspection I noticed that on the passenger side immediately after the header/front cylinder bank (there is a "possible" cat (or resonator??)
and I noticed that there there is another "possible" cat after the back bank.
I'm wondering if these are cats or not? The spc does not show resonators, but it shows the cats stacked, after the rear bank, neither of which I have. ANY HELP ??
