Omar, Because of my profession (I design LeMans sports racing prototype cars) I have "certain" connections at AP Racing that I can "abuse" now and then. My next squeeze on them is going to be for a set of 6 piston calipers and rotors for my TR. |

Brian - that was a great post. Clear, to the point, and helpful. I'm saving it for my TR clutch job. Thanks. Jim S. |

Stephen, I just (2 weeks ago) put a new clutch in my TR. The method suggested by Tom works great. But you need to remove the rear gear cluster cover. (The cover over the 3 "step down gears" at the back) so you can rotate the clutch shaft. If you pull the center gear out (easy as it just slids on its on bearing pack) then you shoud be able to rotate the clutch shaft while slidding the entire bell housing on. Get a friend to help you and have him rotate the flywheel via a big screw driver, going through the access plate on the right upper rear of the flywheel area. (Remove this perforated ally plate) Align everything and then tighten the pressure plate bolts slightly, pull the bell housing and then torque them as required. It is all really very easy. Once you have done this reinstall the bell housing. It may feel tight going on put if you pound away with a wood mallet while your buddy rotates the flywheel it should slid on pretty easily. After that slid the middle drop gear back on. This is a bit of a pain as the helical gears must all be aligned to mesh but once again rotating the flywheel (and wheels-put in 5th gear and turn by hand) will allow the upper and lower drop gears align and allow the middle gear to slid in place. Some other things you should due while replacing the clutch: 1.) Rebuild the slave cylinder. Most Ferrari parts houses carry the rebuild parts and it is easy to do and a must. The cost is about $80-$120 dollars. The biggest cost is the rear main seal-About $60.00 from Ferrari, etc. Its a funny sized seal, but I found a source for $3.00 (After buying the $65.00 seal at Rutlands). E-mail me for details. ([email protected])Make sure you install the rear seal in the proper direction. It is easy to get backwards. Also clean up the slave cylinder shaft with 1200 grit sandpaper and polish nice and smooth. Also apply a bit of assembly grease or oil onto the two lip seals on the throwout bearing housing before assembly onto slave cylinder shaft. You want to have a real nice sliding fit here. 2.) Make sure you have your flywheel balanced, along with your new clutch assembly. Make sure they are balanced separately and not as one unit. This is a no-no. 3.) When you want to fill and bleed the slave cylinder buy a small oil squirt can from Pep boys or autozone and fill it full of brake fluid. Fill the slave cylinder from the bleeder side (remove the bleeder) until fluid comes out the hose side. Then hook up the hose, put the bleeder screw on and bleed the slave unit. The slave unit will feel really bad at first and the pedal will not return on its own at first (use your toe to pull it back up) put should be okay after 5-10 "cycles". Go out and have fun!! PS: How much was your clutch? I got mine from an "inside" source at AP Racing and cost me 250 pounds GB plus shipping and handling. (About $480 US). From Ferrari I was told $2400.00 and the best independent price was $1690.00 US. Talk about mark up!! Brian Willis

Leave the clutch pressure plate and disk somewhat lose. Install the bell housing using the clutch shaft in the bell housing to center the disk. Thighten the pressure plate bolts throught the vent holes on the sides of the bell housing. Now that the disk is centered you can remove the bell housing again and torque the pressure plate bolts to spec. Hope this helps!! |
