Although less likely - batteries can have internal shorts. The alternator will not meet the amp load of all those things together is the battery is intermittantly poopy on the inside. You seem to loose your accesory circuits when a signifigant amp load - the lights - are placed on the system. I am not near my books, but believe that the starting system, the pump and ignition and accessories are all on different busses or trunks, so one may 'steal' from another' based on resistance, usually grounding of those system or some other resistance causing problem. While not intuitive, Zac's problem still may apply and warrents an easy check. In summary Have battery checked or borrow a known good one and replace and try it. Would again check all grounding wires/straps. Have any good electric shop check alt output. Good luck and let us know!! rt

Tom, I don't know if this is a related problem or not but I had some similar problems on my 89 Modial t. I had a new battery and it would start and run fine, lights worked etc, but then would up and die, no power etc. Turns out it was the alternator not putting out enough juice although the warning light still wasn't on; 1 diode gone. I know this isn't exactly the same as yours but it's all I can help with. Chasing ghosts is no fun and can be expensive. Good Luck Zac |

ok did some more trouble shooting tonight. Car starts and runs fine - when I go to turn on the lights I loose the radio, clock, windows every time - nevertheless the car still runs. when this happens if I go to the battery and touch it ever so slightly I get them to come on. This leads me to beleive I have a problem with the battery. The only wierd thing is if its a bad battery why do I on have certian components die on me while the car continues to run, brake lights work, signals work etc. I think I am going to replace the battery which is a optima but about 2 years old and may have bounced around a bit. Any further thoughts????? |

I think you are right on. Would: Secure the battery clean and secure connections and ensure grounding strap not corroided and good chassis ground. In DC circuits, I've seen poor grounding cause weird problems due to funky relay involvement. The fuse box is the Hellmouth. Re-seat relays, or upgrade to the newer plastic bodies ones. Sounds like you re-reated the main connector, but would inspect looking at the connecting surfaces and re-seat. Good luck - let me know if it is something else as it may happen to me. best rt |

Just as a follow up, a few weeks ago my mondial would loose the radio, windows and some other electrical items intermittently, never effected the running of the car, would sometime be intisgated by hitting a bump in the road. I changed all the fuses (had not done that in a while) and used some stabalient on some of the harnesses coming into the fuse box. Did not seem to have an effect, last night I moved the battery and it seemed to effect the problem. I have had issues with a loose neg cable in the past but that always resulted in the car not starting, could a bad neg connection still allow the car to start but give me these electical gremlins? if so can I put stabilent 22 on the battery post? also my battery is not tightly secured, while I know this is not ideal could this also be causing it? TIA |
