IMO Alpine is the way to go. They cost a little more, but the quality sounds so much better then other brands. I have the CDA-7998 which has 2 subwoofer pre outs, which allows you to adjust your bass system amplifier from the deck itself. Im using the passanger secret compartment on my 308 for a 10" sub woofer

Last year i installed a Sony CDX-M630 in my 308 GTSi. www.xplodsony.com
It doesn't play mp3 but i liked the looks of it.
It is black, smooth and remote controlled, the best thing is if you don't use the controls for a few seconds the display turnes black again.
I also installed new speakers to match, Sony XS-K1330.

I just bought a Pioneer DEH-P5500 MP for my car. It is a great cd/mp3/stereo player for a great price. Looks sharp too. Asked people who have had work done. 2 local shops seem to do nice work.

Hi Tazio,

Those are two of my criteria as well - black (to blend in) and no disco lights (my car draws attention in other ways, and I think all the graphic stuff looks "cheap" in any event).

I would also prefer a "period" look - two knobs like they used to be in the 80's - but with modern technology inside. MP3 essential. The Alpine's all look a little...."Matrix"....to me! Which one did you install?

I have always installed my own systems and will continue to do so. No hack jobs!!

Tazio, which unit did you go with? My 328 has a Nakamichi tape deck, which I'm sure was a decent deck in its day, but I've been considering replacing it. I waved off last time--was a little overwhelmed by the amount of choices.

I recently finished a stereo install in my 308. In shopping for a stereo I wanted something that could play both CD's and MP3's, did'nt have too many flashing lights and was black. It was hard to find something with all of these criteria but I am super pleased with the Alpine I got. It play's MP3's, is black in colour (seems as though all stereos are silver now and I don't see it fitting the 'look' of the interior), and it has a blackout feature where you can have all the fancy lights turn themselves off.

As far as installation goes, I opted to do it myself. The absolute hack butcher jobs I have seen from too many stereo shops convinced me that the only way to have the car right was to do it myself; I am very pleased with the results.

With regards to power door locks, I installed these too and am really happy with how well they work. If one day I feel like being a traditionalist, there is nothing stopping me from using the key to open and close the doors.

Peter, I was looking into this as well. You can now get units which are essentially MP3 hard drives that will store everything you've got. They're about the same size, too.

Mark,

Look at the Kenwood "Keg" I holds 500+ .mp3's. It's about $200 USD. I have one in the Explorer and it's the best money i've spent.

Peter,

no power door locks but a custom exhaust....quite a paradox.

Pete,

We've also been discussing something similar on F-Chat Europe - looking for discrete MP3 sound systems for our cars. Still searching!

Thanks for the tips...Matt, yes keyless entry is a great feature. I am going to be a 'purest' on that one though. For me, its kind of a ritual of leaning over and unlocking the door. It always makes me think of the great Ferrari's, years before my time that were opened this way...OK, I can't explain it too well, but I hope you get my drift:-)

It's pretty basic if you're going to have just the radio done. But I'd pick a shop that does a lot of custom work or showcars, as they're more likely to be extra careful rather than just the back door of your local Circuit City.

Most modern CD players have "look ahead" memory (a buffer) so that they are not playing from the CD, but playing from memory that was read from the CD several seconds ago. That's how they take care of potential skip problems. You might also check out MP3/CD players, as that way you can record your own and have 100 or more songs on a single CD. That's what I've got in my 308QV.

Is that all you're going to do? Not upgrade the speakers or anything else? You might check out this thread:

I want to replace an older radio in my 308 with one with a CD player. I have two concerns:

1) Should it be OK to let 'most' stereo shops do the installation? I fear potential electrical problems.

2) Because the ride in my car is not like a family car, what do I look for in a CD player that will not be prone to skipping a lot with the bumps in the road.
