When the light comes on you're using the reserve. From that point on, your driving distance may vary... 308s, especially the carbed ones are notorious for the fuel gauges being optimistic. Also, since the fuel pump is cooled by the gas flowing thru it, you don't want to run low enough for it to occasinally suck air... My QV mileage is about 22 highway (~65mph, drops off quickly above that), 15-16 back-roads commuteing (~35-45mph). Haven't the foggiest what it would do in sustained 'city' traffic. |

I only get about 9 mpg in city. Got 140 mains and free flow exhaust with no cats. I get 11.8 on HGWY.Needs gas all the time. |

Mike, Steve. The light comes on once the tank hit's (or think it hits) 14 gallons. Do not trust the gauge once the light's on. Matt |

Mike - I've always assumed that it's as you say - the light comes on with around 4 gallons left. That 47 mile estimate certainly seems a worst case - but I personally have never gone more than about 20 miles with the red light constantly on. I don't overly trust the accuracy of a 20 year old gauge! |

Regarding 1978 308 GTS fuel tank capacity... The owners manual states a capacity of 18.5 US gallons. Just to the left of that, it's noted: "Reserve of + 4 U.S. Gallon = + 47mls" OK, so at approximately worst-case ("city") 11mpg (also as noted in the owners manual), they're saying 4 gallons left buys you 47 miles. Sounds good. What's the significance of the 4 gallons? I assume that 4 gallons is not a "factor of safety" built in on top of the 18.5 gallon tank, e.g., I assume the tank doesn't actually hold 22.5 gallons. Does this mean the fuel level low guage light is designed to come on (yeah right) with 4 gallons left? Any input as to at what point you think your fuel warning light starts to flicker / comes on and stays on?
