Michael is spot on. Usually the switch on the top bows above the drivers left ear. The ECU must see this sw in a closed position before it will proceed to the next function of moving the seats back to the set position. Very common problem when the cars were first delivered to the dealer and had been sitting for some time with out the top being cycled. Just a light tap, or rotate it on its mount will fix the problem. Durning the warr. period of these cars I never had to replace any of the switches. |

Daivd: You can have a bad pot and get it to operate near normally. That doesn't mean they are good though. If the seats move forward and then back with the top switch, I suspect the pot's are good. If not, there was a string on this in March of this year...see archives. If it closes to the "pause" position and then stalls, and assuming all else is right, it could be two scenerios; first the fluid as oldman suggests above....easy to check as he says, and there was a string around Sept. or so last year on filling, bleeding, fluids etc. If it is fluid level and nothing else, then when it stalls, and while continuing to hold the switch to close, then you should get the fault "beep"...the same one you get say when you try to cycle the top without setting the parking brake. But, as you discribe it, the top stalls at or near the pause point and then the seats start moving back. In my experience, if it goes to the beeping fault mode, then the seats don't move back. Beyond the fluid which is likely low anyway...you may want to check the micro-switch that signals the top ECU that the top is closed. Normally, when the top nears its closed point, the switch signal shuts off the hydraulic pump and simultainiously starts to move the seats back. It may be mal-adjusted telling the ECU that it's closed when it isn't. If you don't have a shop manual...eMail me off line and I'll see what I can do to help. |

If the pots were bad, it wouldn't work at all. My guess is that it is low on oil and need to be bleed. To check the oil level you must remove the cover over the pump that is between the seats. |

Dave, if it is one of the potentiometers under the seat, you can bypass the system by the override switch located on the driver's side of the center console. Pino |

I am assuminmg this is a spider.Supposidly if the cars intricute workings of the top are even slightly out of sink the top will not close until the computer is satisfied w/ the correct code. The dealers computer can diagnose the problem and which part of the top issue is the "the issue".

My 355 roof has stopped closing all the way and I wondered if anyone can point out what to check. When you're closing the roof, it moves the roof up, pauses for a bit (I guess whilst linkages are moving) and then moves the roof forward to the closing position at which the handle and locks can be engaged. My roof now only goes to the point where it pauses, then gives up and moves the seats back. I'm guessing I can check a potentiometer or two but can anyone help me out? Thanks, David. |
