No, 328's have different fuse boxes.

Do 328s have the same fuse strips as 308s? I have seen the fans stop working on 308s due to loose rivets on the fuse strip.

I'm with Dave. The 328 cooling system is very efficient. It takes a while for the temperature to pass the 195 mark and start the fan. The fan also quickly cools the engine so they don't stay on for long. Make sure the system is bled so that coolant is flowing correctly -- the engine may see hot coolant while the radiator (including the sensor) sees cool coolant. But definitely the fans come on while idling for extended periods of time. I usually idle the car and bleed the system till the fans come on at least two times.

Here is how mine works. I have a 1987, and I believe mine works as it should.

1. AC has no effect on the radiator fans. The condenser is in front of the right front wheel. It has its own fan which comes on when the freon temperature exceeds a set point. On hot days, it comes on quickly. On cooler days, it remains off most of the time.

2. The radiator fans work in unison. Both are either on or off. Mine come on when the temperature gauge reaches 195 F. This only occurs at idle or in very slow traffic.

I have had 2 328's and they have efficient cooling systems, much better than 308's. The a/c will turn on the right fan regardless of temp. Try letting the car idle for a while to make sure the left one is operating. If your water temp never gets past 195 on the gauge, don't worry about it.

if you drive for more than 1/2 hour and its warmer than 60 degrees out then your fans should come on- no way the engine will stay cool with out them - imho

John, here's something that happened to me that you should know. My thermostat/fan switch failed, which wasn't a big deal while driving. But I left the car idling for about 10 minutes, it overheated, cooked the water pump and boiled over. Kind of what Rob was describing. May be worth checking.

The A/C turns on the right fan. The rad thermo switch turns them both on.

At least this is how the older cars work.

My car has a manual fan switch, which I leave on in city traffic. It's simply wired in parallel to the rad switch.

I think the A/C runs on a third fan, but I'm not sure.

I believe if you turn the a/c on that the fan will come regardless of the temp. You can try that to be sure the fans themselves are working.

My clock isn't accurate at all!

Mine comes on whichever line is in the middle, I think 195.

It will only come on once the temp hits that mark. Even in the hot Texas heat mine only comes on in traffic or idling with no air flow.

A common problem is the thermostatic sensor not working properly. You can test by letting idle and at 195 the fans should come on and stay on for a little until the water temp goes back down. If your car keeps getting hotter and hotter jump in fast and get it moving. Your thermostatic sensor is bad and overheating is the #1 cause for engine failure.

Many bypass the thermostatic sensor so the fan is always on, if yours does this, I would get it fixed. At least your car isn't overheating, but extra wear on your car as it's running cold longer and below optimum temp.

Sitting in the car, the sensor is at the bottom of the right fan with the front bonnet up.

Hmmm.

Well, either I've got a slightly slow system or my gauge is not quite reading right. I wouldn't be surprised about the latter: I was once told the only truly accurate gauge in the 328 is the clock!

owners manual says they should kick on at 183 degrees which is tough to figure out on the guage because it is marked at 140 and 195 with an unmarked line in between the two of those which i presume is 167.5....AC was not on

On mine, the fans kick on at 195. If you never got to that temp, then you shouldn't see them fire.

Look in the manual and see at what temp the fans are supposed to come on ? Did you have the a/c on ?

My new 328 runs great so far except the cooling fans do not seem to kick on. I took it for a good drive today and the water temp never got up to the 195 degree mark. After an hour of somewhat hard driving the fans did not come on...no overheating problems or anything, no coolants leaks...all seems fine.

is this normal or do i need to worry about the fans, or lack thereof

thanks
