It is true - outside of the downstate counties there is no emissions testing up-state NY. Insurance is much cheaper too. Time to find a friend up there.. |

Thanks to all I will keep you posted on this saga....this poor soul was so frustrated that he is rapidly getting anti-ferrari....I am trying to keep him pro-ferrari and anti-gov't regulations ...all this info is very helpful..I for one would not buy a eurocar since there are enough hassles with the us spec ones you don't need gov't issues on top of it all |

Sam Assume it is a HC reading. I thought the 85s had no air pump but cats in the US. Plumbing in a cat shouldn't be that expensive ($1000?). Cat will really help get the HC reading down. Philip |

My 1984 US 308 QV just passed emissions with 12 HC with a limit of 220 HC. CO was zero. The test was an idle test since the inspection garage felt the car was too risky to test on their dyno due to the car's low ground clearance (an idle test should be a little easier to pass than a dyno test). I was recently looking at a friends Euro 308 QV emission printout, and he just barely passed the 220 HC limit (with no cats or air pump). It may be possible that your friend's 400 HC could be brought down closer to the passing mark with a new set of spark plugs and a leaning out of idle mixture. Good Luck, Chris |

As someone who just had to go thru this, and hence turn down a car he really liked.. let me assure you that any state can and will "make you". In this case, they can make you take any car after "Date X" and make sure it has EVERY stinkin' bit of emissions junk that came on the same car of US Spec. In Utah, that "breakdown" is 1983. If it's 1983 or older, no equipment is needed as long as it passes the "sniffer test". If it's 1984 or later then it must both HAVE the equipment AND pass the requisite emissions limit. Here, it is county by county. Other states may differ of course, but any that have emissions programs will have something like this setup. Jim |

Come on down to Alabama. They will let any car with four wheels on the road. No emissions tests. In fact, I have seen some better cars in the junk yards. |

Sam--I may be wrong, but if the car was legitimately brought into the US and has all DOT, EPA, etc papers, I didn't think that they could force someone to retro equip a car with emissions stuff, IF it didn't come with it from the factory. Also, in Upstate NY, they don't even test the emissions. They just give a quick look to see if the car is equipped properly. Maybe NYC is more stringent--this may be the case. Another option may be to go to an independent vs a dealer--he may get a different story. I wonder if he could just drive to the Upstae area and inspect/ register it here. It may be easier. |

Hi, My buddy's euro 308 qv 1985 can't be registered since he can't pass inspection..his emissions are something like 400 (?) does that make sense...anyway he , of course does not have a cat or air pump or anything and the ferrari dealer told him it would be about 5-6 grand to get him to pass... I knwo thsi has been discussed before ..any quick cheap fixes..? |
