The only trouble one may cause is after battery disconnect, just don't touch the throttle for about 5 - 10 minutes. Otherwise, you risk the computer thinking that closed throttle is actually 5deg open which may cause drivability problems.

Try installing a trickle charger that is current sensing on your battery. The battery should not die after a week, or even a few weeks, the charger will ensure it's always ready to go. Get the type with a connector permenantly installed, so you only do a quick connection each time the car sits for a while.

Euro spec or not, the self-learn capabilities are the same.

I have a 1993 512TR Euro spec, I always turn off the battery isolating switch if the car is not to be used for more than a week. I've never noticed any problem in starting and driving almost immediately, am I just lucky or are Euro cars different, should I leave battery connected at all times? I was told years ago that it helped to reduce corrosion, any comments?

SRA, sounds like you're losing the whole bank, most likely (but not exclusively) electrical contact (or lack therof) issue. Check the error code, check ground connections, check all engine related connectors. By no means are these the only possibilities.

Do an archive seach on this subject, invest some time reading what comes up on this subject, it will save you in the long run.

Hey Guys,

Heres whats happening with my car. I have been cleaning my door jam plugs on my 91 348ts, which requires me to disconnect the power, and I have been using the kill switch by the engine. Now, when I drive it's normal, then suddenly it feels as if the timing changes for a moment, and then it may change back. Also, the slow down 5-8 light flashes ( I think the 1-4 bulb may be out).

Could this be because I have NOT reset the ECU?
( I am going to try this anyway)

Thanks,

Steve

Here's the scoop:

Only OBD I ecu's can be "reset" via battery disconnect. So, this is 1995 and earlier Motronic, Marelli units in the USA, or any OBD I compliant ECU worldwide. I'm not the KE Jetronic expert I should be, so without grabing my manuals, I cannot confirm, but I do beleive, that these systems also lose their error code memories (though they don't self-learn).

Motronic 5.2 and newer (1996 - ) are self-learning but you need an OBDII code reader to reset the error codes stored in memory.

Self-learn after battery disconnect is as follows:
1. Start engine
2. Do not touch throttle
3. Wait for cooling fans to run (this is an easy way to know enough time has elapsed, self-learn has nothing to do with the fans), as Reiner stated, about 10 minutes.
4. Drive

What's happening is the ECU is learning throttle position.

philip,

I'll answer this one to the best of my knowledge.
It seems that on the 348 you need to leave the
battery disconnected for ~10sec, then reconnect.
The car needs to idle for ~8-10 minutes so the
computer transitions from open loop to closed loop (i.e. the lambda sensors give correct feedback to the motronic units).

I've read a few times on this site, that if your battery is disconnected, when you restart the car let it idle for 15 minutes......is this critical? Also, if the battery is disconnected, how long does it need to be disconnected in order to "reset" the electronics. Is it instant, or do you need to leave the battery disconnected for a long time? How long?

Thanks
