Thanks Joe...I'll try the rubber gloves idea. When I put the new filter on I did flip the rubber seal so the flat side was facing upwards. My oil pressure sending unit looks fine with no problems, same for the oil pressure during driving, all looked good. The suspect bolt is the one that is the farthest towards the driver's side, just above the oil filter, that appears to retain the filter housing. Maybe when I removed the air-pump and associated hardware I loosened this bolt and failed to tighten it up, or that it must be coated prior to tightening as it runs into an oil passage? I'll remove it and let you know what happens. I'm thinking of also retorquing all studs/bolts just as a precaution.

Jeff,

Let the motor cool off while putting the car up on jack stands. You should wait a while so that the oil from the oil tank will drain back to the sump under the motor, maybe a couple hours.

Wipe off the oil filter with a rag and use some sort of rubber sheet or gloves to remove the filter. It should come off by hand. If not, you may have to use an oil filter tool.

Look at the oil pressure-sending unit. They sometimes fragment and start to leak. Did you notice the oil pressure before or when this happen? Exactly where is the suspect bolt?

Also, when you last changed your filter, did you flip the rubber seal so that the flat side is facing up?

Hopefully the image below will help you pin-point the bolt you suspect.

Let us know, Joe

My TR has developed an oil leak that appears to come from a bolt/hole location. I put the car up on jackstands and cleaned off the motor, frame and anywhere else there was oil. What a mess. The leak is from the front of the engine near the oil filter. I started the motor and watched...nothing? So I waited for about 5 minutes and then it appeared that the filter was indeed leaking so I wiped it off and felt around the top, but the top was clean. So it couldn't be the filter gasket. I then cleaned off the oil sensor wires and the wires that used to go to the air pump (which I removed last winter) to get a better look. All the gaskets look good and dry around the front of the engine, so now what? Well...there is a bolt directly above the oil filter that has oil dripping off of it. Does this bolt lead into an oil passage? I cannot tighten it until I remove the filter. And I can't remove my filter because I bought one of those cheap strap/chain filter wrenches that won't do the job. Is it common for bolts and studs to "weep" oil unless periodically tightened up? And finally, would a truck service place have a proper filter wrench to fit these gigantic filters?
