This is ancient history now, but I posted a query under something to the effect of "Rhythmic tapping noise". It would come and go at intervals of 3 or 4 seconds. Diagnosis ranged from broken valve spring to ?????. My mechanic suggested maybe something wrong with a valve shim - this was w/o him personally listening.

Well, long story short (or is that too late already?), I just had a 30K done. Most valves were within spec, but he replaced all the shims that were in the area making noise just in case.

Noise gone.

Altho all the shims looked just fine, we're surmising that maybe one was very slightly bent causing a noise to change as it rotated, or maybe there was a tiny piece of gunk (technical term) under a shim that, again, would change as it rotated. That these shims rotate is a forgone conclusion if you look at the surface of one. The entire surface is uniformly polished, which wouldn't be the case if the cam were rubbing against just one spot.

Andrew...right on! Had the very same thing happen to me after purchasing the 308...full major, including water pump rebuild, fixed the problem.

Another head-scratcher-type "clicking", or more aptly, "metallic tinkling" noise, can be a water pump starting to go bad. Usually you hear it on start-up.... goes away after the engine warms a little. But it can drive you up a tree to find it.

It was a stray nut from the road.

Just the one is being replaced. The other is just about a year old. It should be done in a couple of hours. I am really lucking. I did not see the nut until this morning and even then it was pure luck because the sun hit it just right. And to think I was driving it hard like that yesterday. I guess the belts are stronger then I thought. If I get the old belt, I will take a picture.

Thanks Hans for you help last night on the phone.

If the nut was imbedded in the belt I would consider an immediate belt replacement.

Hmmm... Sounds like we're doing an early 30K. i.e. if the belt's gotta come off, while we're in there.........

(Just went thru that routine.)

If it's one of those nuts from the carburetor air horns, I'd say you got off lucky, even in light of the need to go in and replace that timing belt. Don't ask me how I know. :-)

BTW, the 'Add' mark on the dipstick is about one quart low, not two. Some folks run an extra pint or so beyond the 'Full' mark to discourage oil starvation at the track, but I wouldn't put two full quarts in if the oil is anywhere close to the 'Add' mark.

I found the problem

A nut had found it's way into the timing belt and forced it's way INTO the belt.

John,

It was between Full and Add. I checked it when I got home and it was below add but still on the stick. I added 2 to bring it to full

I did notice my Oil Pressure was low for the last few miles. I added 2 quarts of oil when I got home. I will check in the morning to see if it is still making noise.

Um, what about the oil level? Pressure is not necessarily correlated with level. If you added two quarts to a car that was already less than a quart low, then you'll be getting up close and personal with Ms. Main Seal before you know it.

The drive was about 15 miles, High RPM but low speeds. I was testing my new coils and optical pickups.

Oil level was fullish to start.

Ulf,

I checked the wires and they are fine.

Verell,

Oil cap is tight and good.

It was about 4 hours between the drive and shut off. I did notice my Oil Pressure was low for the last few miles. I added 2 quarts of oil when I got home. I will check in the morning to see if it is still making noise.

I hope it is just that simple.

Tough to say, could be anything from a slightly noisy valve to a broken valve spring or a sticking or leaky valve. They all make clicks of some kind.

Make sure the oil fill cap is on tight as normal noise could be leaking out if it's a bit loose.

Start it up tomorrow AM & see if the noise is still there. A couple of times after a long spirited drive in warm weather, one or two of my QV's cylinders had me scared. After cooling down overnight, the noise was gone when I started the car the next AM. I think the oil just thinned out & drained away much faster than normal.

Even an expert's educated ear can be wrong at times, much less trying to call it based on a text description.

It's probably safe enough to limp into a dealer or service shop for an educated ear listen, just keep the engine revs fairly low.

For a really good diagnosis, the cam cover will have to be pulled and the mark1 eyeball applied. At that point the spring pressure can be compared to the other springs.

Next level of diagnosis would be to pressurize the cylinder with air & pull the cam & valve spring.

I suspect the extenders for the spark plugs or possibly the wires. An arching spark could sound very similar to valve noise. Check for any visible spark when dark, and/or meassure the resistance of your cables and extenders.

New problem.

I took it for a nice drive today and I fired it up tonight and I hear a clicking sound coming from the cylinder under the oil fill hole. It's consistant and rises and lowers with RPM

1. is it a valve shim?
2. is it o.k. to drive on?
3. is it a "to do list" item?

TIA Matt
