Who all has speakers in that rear shelf? My car has holes cut in the shelf, but there's sheetmetal blocking the holes. I'm not sure what used to be there, or if a person once upon a time cut holes and realized they couldn't put speakers there. |

My doors have 6.5" Alpine speakers in them right now. There was no cutting done, but some new holes drilled to mount the speakers. |

I wanted to stay a little closer to stock looking and went 5 1/4 in the door, but with a new grill, tweeters on the dash and an 8" sub behind the pass kick panel. It works quite well, much better than the OEM junk, although not competition level. |

Do you want to stay stock or have something custom made like this?

A custom kick panel would be this. They are made custom for your car by a GOOD shop and like Steven said they can be covered to match your interior.

Pat, Custom kick panels would be great as they can be painted/color matched or wrapped in color matched leather/carpet. This also could allow for proper cabinet space (and acoustic dampening) for the drivers. Also, play around with phasing once the install is complete. Many times reversing the phase of the door speakers can have benefits to soundstaging, though this IS mobile audio and i do not expect such great things from a car with all the compromises as in my high-end home audio system. In the car, i shoot for proper tonal balance and harmonics over imaging. The REAL trick, too, is having everything time aligned at your ears. We could go on and on about using high-resolution digital products for "room correction", etc... yet this would be semi-off topic and get into the very esoteric realm. What a minute, we ARE talking about installation in an exotic car :-) Forget the stereo, lighten the car as much as possible and get a better exhaust note :-) Enjoy the Music, er, um, Drive, Steven R. Steven, Not sure on if there is enough room but couldn't he put in a set of those custom made kick panel speakers? Those really help out the sound stage quite well if you are low on space for placing speakers. That's cool that you used to do some judging for IASCA. I have been in some of their events in the past years. |

Hi Mark, Fully agree with you. As an IASCA sound quality judge, keep the soundstage in FRONT of you. i'd go with 6.5" in the doors (lose the stock grills) and tweeter mounted higher in the door or on the dash. Get an outboard amplifier (Soundstream, etc) and have fun. If your mains are not "right", no use adding bandaids behind you IMHO. Enjoy the Drive, Steven R. Rochlin

From the standpoint of a good sounding stereo, its not a great idea to put primary speakers behind you. Its like going to a concert and sitting with your back to the stage. A subwoofer in pretty non-directional, so that would be fine in back or maybe a couple 4 speakers at low volume to give some rear fill, but thats about it. I think youll be much happier with the sound if you spend your money on an amp and a good set of speakers for the doors (maybe loose the stock spearker covers)and a pair of tweeters mounted up front somewhere mine are on the dash and work well. |

I had my speakers mounted there and have had no problems. Just adjust the fade to whatever level you want coming out of the rear speakers. I have mine adjusted to about 30% from the rear and 70% from the in-door speakers.

I wish to add a second pair of speakers in my 308 (Two are in the door). I have listened to very impressive, small speakers that would fit very well on the rear shelf below the rear window of my 308. The type I like are about 1.5" tall and about 2" round that could be mounted on double-back adheisive. Just seeing if many people do this Vs flush-mount type and would they be too loud (next to my left ear)? Is this a bad place to mount the second pair? |
