My ex-330GTC required a valve adjustment every 9k miles I believe. My BB512i calls for a valve adjustment every 18k miles. |

Andrew - right you are - "...tongue in cheek..." My 2009 estimate is based on 15,000 to 18,000 miles. This is what is recommended for 1972 Daytona, Dino, 365 GTC/4, etc., with shims and '72 era cam metallurgy. Jim S. |

Hey there Ken. Though Jim's tongue-in-cheek post is about right, lol, there's something to keep in mind. In Daytona era cars, we had leaded gas, meaning the engines used "soft" valve seats, which could rely on lead's cushioning effect. Unless your engine has been upgraded to hardened seats, or you're using either leaded Avgas or lead additives, valve/seat erosion will require more frequent adjustment to take up the slack from the erosion. This, of course, would be atop normal wear. I don't know of any "formula" predicting how fast this progresses, or causes deviation from the standard maintenance schedules, but I'd just say if it were my car, I'd check clearances every year. The bottom line to your question is that you adjust clearences when they need to be adjusted. |

Just curious: in a Daytona or similar era car, if driven about 3000 miles a year and not raced, how often should valve clearences be adjusted? This is assuming the engine is running strong, no oil consumption, etc. |
