Russ, You could have done this on April Fools Day and we would have accepted it. Just kidding, I hope that solves your problem. BRGDS |

Hi Guys. thanks for all of the helpfull suggestions. I think that I discovered the problem. Here in Spokane Wash. where I live the highways have slight grooves where studded snowtires have worn away part of the surface. You can see the grooves when the light is right. The wandering sensation comes about when one side drops into the groove. No problem at high speeds when I am carefull to keep all wheels out of a groove. By the way this site is teriific and I am in debt to a lot of folks who have answered my questions. Sometime after I have had more time in my 328 perhaps I will be a contributor. |

Russ, Check your steering rack. Jack it up in the front end and turn each wheel to see if the play is in the rack. Sometimes the less weight on the rack could cause a different feel in the steering wheel. Also check for leaks at the boots. Low fluid could create this problem also. |

If it seems that the front end wants to wonder then the only thing I can think of is a bad ball joint. Check all of them for play. I have had this happen to me on other cars and trucks, |

Have you had alignment recently? |

I am not too sure what the mechaincal culprits could be, but you might also consider the aerodynamic culprits. If the problem is high-speed related, it could be a down-force issue. Could there be something causing more rear downforce at high speed causing the front to lift slightly? Or maybe there is a little extra lift in the nose due do a misaligned chin spoiler? Just some thoughts. I think the mechaincal route is a good place to start since those problems are easier to find and fix.

Perhaps your tide rods need replacement or another part in the suspension. Jack up your car (take the usually precautions) and see if the front wheels have any free play. If you can move the front well left and right, then something needs to be replaced. |

At about 100MPH in my 1988 328 the front end does not seem very stable and seems to wander as if it were getting pushed around by the wind which it isn't. this is enough instability to be somewhat unnerving. The tire pressures are correct. However the tires although correct sizes are mismatched. THey are Goodyear Eagles on the front v rated and I just put new Eagle HP z rated tires on the back. The treads are also quite a bit different front and back. Any thoughts would be appreciated. |
