I know of people that had problems with their TR transmission, and end-up replacing it for a 512TR transmission. Obviously they seem to be interchangeable. I wander if they are really getting their moneys worth. Ric, thanks for the feedback.

From what I can tell (I own the parts and service manuals to both cars), the 512TR tranny and TR tranny are virtually identical. There is a difference in the dimensions and perhaps the splines of the long input shaft. Other than that, there's a large amount of duplication.

Ric, is the 512TR service manual much different from the TR's manual in that area (gearbox)? Did you rebuilt the tranny using 512TR parts? I heard that the 512TR tranny is more resilient than the TR one, but I still hear about the same number of TRs vs. 512TRs tranny issues.

I rebuilt the tranny in my TR, but I don't have the procedure memorized. I remember fretting with the same problem. The procedure outlined in the 512TR service manual was what got me through it.

If I remember correctly, there are bearing retaining screws and tabs in and around the reverse gear section that must be removed before the axle will move.

Although I've done a few Ferrari gearbox overhauls, it always seems to be a challenge to get the primary and secondary shafts out of the case. In this particular instance, I've removed the secondary shaft front nut...and am attempting to gently?? drive the shaft rearward towards the differential housing. The diff is floating free in the case and does not pose any inteference problems. Before I start with the (expensive) force technique, does anyone who has done this repair before have any hint as to how to get the shaft out.
Thanks all,

David
