I just fixed my brake and it took 10 seconds !!! When I lifted up the lever and shined a light through it, I noticed that the lock mechanism is stuck in the open position. I got a screwdriver and pushed it back in place and just like magic, it's working again :-)

Thanks to the two Edward's who tried to help me.

I once had a VW with a Dune buggy full length truck type body on it with 12" wide Mickey Thompson tires on the rear. It was a fun car and I have never seen another like it. I will send some pictures of it when I go to Florida next trip.

Then,,,,,,,,,,,, I guess, the best half to own would be the bottom half. Then at least you can put one of those 246 Dino bodies on that pan. But, sadly, you still have to start it, then listen to that engine purrrrrrrrrrr. (ha ha) a-cowa, a-cowa, a-cowa, a-cowa

But, it's my dad's car. sooooooooooooooooo, (choke, panic) it's gonna be mine someday.

That was just a question. I don't want either half. I have worked on so many of those damn things, I am glad they are almost all in the salvage yards.

Then I guess I must say I'm sorry. Sorry Ed G.

The Viagra comment was just a pun. ( If you read the whole list of posts, you will see it was started by Julian himself.)

Anyway,
if you guys haven't been totally turned off by this thread, you must check out Julians ride in his profile.

Julian,
I believe, that since I need to trade up sometime in my "F" car future, I would really consider a black spider like yours. In black, the 348's look "flippin" bad.

Hey Ed G.,
(If your flippin question was directed toward me.) I "have" flippin worked on (and currently am 1/2 owner of a flippin 1960 VW Beetle). If not, please ignore my flippin smart a$$ comments. And,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the later model flippin Ferrari mechanisms are not subject to this flippin failure. (ha ha)

Bruce and magoo,
If my answere seems irrational, sorry. But, a rebuild of the later mechanisms is kind of tricky.
You gotta have the mechanism out and in your hand to know what I was flippin talking about.

Julian,
Email me (Look in my profile) I'll try to make it more clear.

Oh,, I also tried the Fiat 124 & X-19 type, but they are different then a Mondial's, I don't know about a 348, but I'll bet you have one like mine.

If this fails, try the Viagra. (ha ha )

Julian,
I believe this is a common Ferrari problem. (Seems that those lil-italian men have girley arms and never overpower the mechanism.)
ha ha
You broke the tip off of the mouse, or the ratcheting part. You can buy a new one $$$$$500.00!

or, you can take the old one apart, drill out the rivets, take the part to a locksmith and have some new metal welded to the warn off part (the tip) then grind it back into the correct shape, then, quench harden the part.
To do this you need some MAP gas, and about 5 fire brick to make a small furnace. Heat the part to red hot, do this outside, don't burn you house down! Stand back AND WEAR A FACE SHEILD, pick the part up quickly and drop it into a coffee can filled with engine oil. (Make sure you are not wearing shorts or your 1972 polyester leasure suit, or,,,,, you will spend the rest of your life looking like Niki Lauda, with out his fame & fortune.) The part will now be harder & better then new, re-assemble with a screw, or a bolt, and lots of blue locktight.
If you pick a low profile bolt, you won't have to grind the head down to 1/2 thickness to fit inside the mechanism.
Mine now works great.

Good luck.

Old VW Beetles used to do this. If the brake handle comes up too far the ratchet assembly would flip over and would not latch until you pull the handle back up and flip the ratchet back over and then adjust the park brake.

No,the cable did not break because if I hold the brake handle up, the brake is actually engaged. It just that the brake handle won't stay up, like what ever device locks the cable in place when you pull up on the handle is broken.

I just wanted to get an idea and see if it's an easy fix before taking it to the dealer.

Had a similar problem on a Daytona many years ago. The tip broke off the pawl which engages the lever. Dealers wanted a fortune for a new assembly, so I went to the boneyard and bought one from a wrecked Fiat 124 Spyder for $5. It is the same part mechanically, so parts can be switched. Just used what I needed and rebuilt the original.

Did you break the e-brake cable? Have you put the car up on stands yet to see the underside? You may need to remove the center console to start narrowing down the problem area.

I overpowered my E-brake to disengage it and now I can't engage it because the handle won't stay up (I hear Viagra jokes coming :-) ). The E-brake is on if I hold the handle up, but it would just falls back down again :-(

Thanks in advance for your help
