Justin,

I mailed them several month ago! Said they dont produce products for the 348 but would be happy to provide me with equipment " for my future cars"! :-(
Guess it looks bad for the 348 with them! Still dont quite understand why, though.

Jens,

I have spoken to them and offered my car as a prototype. They were not interested...
Shame....

I want one for the 348. I asked but they have no plans to make one. The intake system would be great on the 348 because loads of room for bigger air filter system... Please make one....

errr.. guys may I butt in - I sell the product.

Right - the product is NOT made of Carbon Fibre - it is made of carbon-kevlar (even more expensive). Why this material???
Well if you look closely, the intakes on the F355 are placed above the damn silencer and cats - this is terrible from an efficiency point of view because it means the intake virtually fries the air going into the engine - net result of stock intake - poor performance.... SOOOO how do you combat this??? Make the intake from Carbon/Kevlar which is as good a material to thermally insulate the air going in as is possible in this price range..........
Better still - the kit from GruppeM we sell comes with a TITANIUM heat shield to further dissipate heat......
As you'll know these items are also extremely light..... (and expensive).

The sheer size of the intake permits MUCH more airflow (this is exageratted by the nature of the early 2.7 version F355 that have two intake channels as opposed to the 5.2 version cars).
Inside the intake, the crappy stock pancake air filters are scrapped for dual ULTRA flow conical air filters. Other than just "cleaning" the air, they have the effect of creating supersonic airstreams that literally RAM air into the engine.
Furthermore they STABILISE air flow going into the engine - this is pretty important from an efficiency point of view....why? Because if you can control air flow-patterns then you can put even MORE air into the engine.

SO - net result - LOADS and LOADS more air, at a proper NACA temperature, going into the engine in a controlled and stable fashion....Damn things even look great in the engine bay!

These kits have cost a lot of $$$$$$ to develop, let alone manufacture, which is why they cost as much as they do....

If you want one - let me know :-)

P.S. Modman is totally totally right about the labour/effort involved in manufacture.......
P.P.S Jens - stop feeling sorry for yourself!!! :-) :-) :-)

Taek-Ho,

Yep, this is also one of the Gruppe M intakes.
BTW: Have I mentioned that I wished that they would do something for my little old 348, too?
:-)

Robert,

Of course the Gruppe M kits are very expensive. On the other hand its carbon fibre.
Sponsor or this site wants 250$ for a very tiny cf shifting console of a 348. This thing is perhaps 15cmX15cm big.
Now this intake really is a huge part made completely made out of cf.
After considering this I still think its expensive and you also pay for the brand name, too. On the other hand this price is not totally out of this world.
I would still consider it if it would be available for a 348. Not because of the looks but because of the improvement of torque! :-)

My only thoughts of why the price is high is that if you want something unique and the type of car it's going on is high dollar, that in terms which means you have the money to burn and you don't have the time or abilities to make one yourself. The materials used to make the airbox is nothing compared to the labor to make one. I would have to admit that it sucks to work with carbon as it makes you itchy and if you breathe the carbon dust it will shorten your health... a price to pay if you don't do it properly.

Robert, Mitch,

Interesting, interesting! Still embarassed that they dont do anything for the 348! :-(
Why? Afterall the model was produced quite often (=Big market) and there is surely room for improvements in the air intake section...

"Could you explain why this is one unit while the stock has two separate air intakes?"

So you can get to some of the parts under this airbox easier. The exhaust valve that opens at 3500 PRMs is located at the center under this box. The hose connecting the valve to its vacuum supply is known to 'go out' at regular intervals. IT needs to be replaced regularly.

I think it is for more air volume and flow.

Robert,

Thanks for the pics! Looks pretty neat and good quality, too! Could you explain why this is one unit while the stock has two separate air intakes?
Just curious!
