DJ, The FCA Northwest's FerrariFAQ has the best write-up I know of: "What should I do before buying a Ferrari?" http://www.ferrariclub.com/faq/prebuy.html Wish I'd known it existed before I bought my F*.

I spent 2 hours under mine inspecting the suspension/ball joints and bushings, steering rack, belly pan for bottoming damage (you'll find it on most), brakes, hoses, pipes and tubes, linkages and cables, grommets, leakage around seals and gaskets from the engine and transaxle, exhaust system, fuel line condition etc..... I took all of the inspection panels off to do this inspection. That was just for the underside of the car. After my inspection was done (including compression test) I had spent over 5 hours checking the car and that was before the test drive. I still found things after I got home and started cleaning the chassis of the the car for repaint. I am still finding things to do on the car 5 months later but then that is the joy of the Ferrari experience....HAHAHAHAHAHA If you can't do it yourself pay to have it done by a nit-picking perfectionist. It brought the price down on my car a couple of grand after I presented my list of defects to the owner. Hope this helps, DJ |

electrics, rust, accidents, suspension, engine, fuel system, etc., etc., etc.... anything and everything that would/could be an issue. A quality PPI takes 2-4 hours depending on variables. |

I searched the boards and found a lot of talk about making sure you have a PPI before purchase, but nothing about what is done. My question is, what exactly whould a mechanic be doing, looking for, etc. on a carb'd 308 if I called and asked for a PPI on the car? I've heard compression check and maybe leakdown, but what else would he do? Checking that everything works - lights, windows, etc. is something I could certainly do when I go to look at the car. |
