Terry is correct, I had the headers and mufflers on my Boxer cermanic coated. The headers were coated inside and out with the mufflers coated on the outside only. |

The powder coating Frank mentions is probably not actually typical powder coating.... I had this done by airborne coatings. Its a ceramic coating process that works like powder coating, but is thicker, much more durable and has far better heat insulating capabilities than the original bulky heat shielding. The ceramic coating will also protect the headers from rust and they will last much longer. ITs a great service, and they look fantastic when done. |

Dave&Frank There's a bit more to it than that. Much of the rust is caused by interal packing/baffling rusting. Short driving defineatly as Jens points out hastens this problem. SS Steel is the way to go but make sure the internals including wool are SS as well. Patching from the outside only works for a while. Jim |

My BB512i exhaust had some small rust holes when I removed it for a major service. I had the holes welded up and then had the entire exhaust powder coated. It now looks better than new. |

Dave, Well,I fear used exhausts of this age might rust from time to time especially if the owner often did short drives with the car (Slight amounts of water stay inside of the exhaust and cause rust). If the cracks are only small you might get them welded for a fairly small amount at an independent shop (Just keep in mind that you dont mention the bad F-word: Its a Toyota exhaust! ) At least this I have heard of a 328 manifold which had tiny cracks. I just purchased a used stock BBi exhaust system from Amerispec and received it today and decided to beadblast the resinators and POW....rust holes! Apparently they were not noticable until i blasted the finish off.Is this common with these systems to do this and is it repairable (weld) without causing more damage. The holes are very small about 2 to 4 mm dia. and seem to be on the bottom and the top half?? of the resinators. I will call Amerispec and hope they do something but hate to ship back . Any information will be helpful. Thanks Dave |
